The Archbishop Wood boys basketball team has been one of the most successful programs in the area over the last few years. The Times Herald-Media Roundup recently did a story on the team and their success.

Archbishop Wood Basketball – The Team is a boys Basketball team from Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania. The team is a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association and plays in the PIAA Class 4A Eastern Division. The team is coached by John Bronczek and assisted by Matt Denehey and Mike Muscella.

The team won the PIAA Class 4A state championship in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The team has also won the Philadelphia Catholic League championship in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The team was featured in a March 2018 article in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Archbishop Wood Basketball – The Schedule

The Archbishop Wood boys basketball team will be in action this week as they take on three non-league opponents. The Vikings will open up the week on Tuesday evening when they travel to Germantown Academy for a 7:00 pm tilt. Archbishop Wood will then return home to face St. Augustine Prep on Friday Night at 7:30 pm. The Vikings will complete their week on Saturday when they travel to Penn Charter for a 1:00 pm contest. All three games this week will be played away from home.

This week’s games will be a good test for the Vikings as they prepare for the final stretch of their schedule. Archbishop Wood currently has an overall record of 12-10, and they are 11-6 in league play. The Vikings are currently in fourth place in the Catholic League standings, and they are just two games behind first place Roman Catholic Archbishop Wood has already clinched a spot in the Catholic League playoffs, and they are looking to improve their position in the standings over the final few weeks of the regular season

Archbishop Wood Basketball – The History

In the annals of boys’ basketball in the Philadelphia Catholic League very few teams can match the success of Archbishop Wood. The Vikings have won 12 league championships, including a record seven in a row from 2013-2019. They have also been to the state semifinals 11 times, and the state championship game four times.

One of the reasons for Wood’s success is that the school has always been able to attract Top Players Some of the more notable alumni include Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph’s), Rasual Butler (La Salle), Fuquan Edwin ( Seton Hall) and Carrington Bradford ( Villanova). Most recently, it was current St. Joseph’s star Lamarr Kimble who helped lead Archbishop Wood to a state title in 2016.

In addition to its Great players Archbishop Wood has also had some excellent coaches over the years. One of the most successful was John Mosco, who led the team to five league titles and two state semifinals during his tenure from 1985-1997. More recently, it was Woody Carter who guided Archbishop Wood to seven straight league titles from 2013-2019.

As Archbishop Wood prepares for yet another run at a league title this season, let’s take a look back at some of the great moments in team history.

Archbishop Wood Basketball – The Championships

On Wednesday night, the Archbishop Wood boys basketball team won their first Pennsylvania state championship defeating Imhotep Charter 65-57 in the Class 5A final at the Giant Center in Hershey. It was an incredible achievement for a team that finished the regular season with a 20-6 record and was the fifth seed in the District 12 tournament.

The win capped off a remarkable run through the State Tournament for Archbishop Wood, which defeated four higher-seeded teams on its way to the title. The Vikings also became the first team from District 12 to win a state Basketball Championship in the PIAA era (since 1972).

I had a chance to speak with Archbishop Wood Head Coach John Mosco about the win, and he was understandably thrilled. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Mosco said. “We’re just so proud of our guys and what they’ve accomplished.”

When asked about the key to his team’s success in the State Tournament Mosco pointed to their defensive effort. “We really challenged our guys to step up defensively, and they really responded,” he said. “We held some really good teams to below their season scoring averages.”

Offensively, Archbishop Wood was led by senior guard Tom McCarroll, who scored 19 points in the state final. McCarroll was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and he finishes his career as the school’s All-time leading scorer with 1,874 points.

The Vikings also got strong contributions from junior forward Tony Richards (14 points) and sophomore guard Tysheem McCalmon (12 points). Richards was named to the all-tournament team, while McCalmon came up big in Archbishop Wood’s semifinal win over Lansdale Catholic with 23 points.

It was a historic night for Archbishop Wood basketball, and one that will long be remembered by everyone associated with the program.

Archbishop Wood Basketball – The Future

With the 2015-2016 season now complete, it is time to take a look at what the future holds for Archbishop Wood basketball.

The 2015-2016 Archbishop Wood boys basketball team made it all the way to the 2nd Round of the PIAA Class AAAA State Playoffs before being knocked out by eventual state champion Roman Catholic. The Vikings finished with a final record of 22-6.

What does the future hold for Archbishop Wood basketball? Judging by the talent that is coming back next season, the answer is a lot. The Vikings will return four starters and several key role players from this past years team. They will also add a strong freshman class to the mix.

The talent and depth on next years team could make Archbishop Wood a state title contender. But as always, there will be stiff competition in District 12 and in the Philadelphia Catholic League It should be another fun ride for Vikings fans next winter!

Archbishop Wood’s boys’ basketball team has a long and proud tradition of success on the court.

The Archbishop Wood boys basketball teams season came to an end Saturday with a 54-52 loss to Imhotep Charter in the PIAA Class 5A quarterfinals.

It was a tough way to lose for the Vikings, who led by five points with less than two minutes left in the game but couldnt hold on.

Nonetheless, it was an impressive run for Archbishop Wood, which finished the season 26-5 and won its first Philadelphia Catholic League Championship since 2013. The Vikings also won aDistrict 12 title and reached the state semifinals for the first time since 2014.

Its been an unbelievable season, Archbishop Wood coach John Brosius said after Saturdays game. Weve had some great moments, some adversity along the way. Obviously, we would have liked to have ended it differently tonight, but I couldnt be more proud of my guys and what they accomplished this year.
