The History of Argentine Basketball

Argentina has a long and storied history in the sport of basketball. The game was first introduced to the country in the early 1900s by American expatriates, and it quickly took hold as a popular pastime. In the years since, Argentine basketball teams have enjoyed success at both the amateur and professional levels.

Basketball was first introduced to Argentina in 1903 by an American physical education teacher named Ernesto Bosch. Bosch was hired to work at a school in Buenos Aires, and he soon began teaching his students how to play the game The students took to basketball quickly, and Bosch soon founded the country’s first basketball team called “La Asociacin Argentina de Basketball” (AAB).

The AAB quickly became a force in Argentine sports, winning numerous championships in its early years. In 1921, the AAB sent a team to compete in the newly founded South American Basketball Championship (now known as the FIBA Americas Championship). The Argentine team finished in second place behind Brazil, but they would go on to win the next four editions of the tournament.

In 1936, Argentina made its debut at the Olympic Games sending a team to compete in Berlin. The Argentine team finished fifth overall, but they did not medal. Four years later, Argentina once again competed at the Olympics, this time held in London. The country won its first ever Olympic medal when forward Luis Scola took home bronze in the men’s individual event. Since then, Argentina has won a total of six Olympic medals in basketball (three silver and three bronze).

The Argentine Basketball League

The Argentine Basketball League (in Spanish: Liga Nacional de Bsquetbol, also known as the Liga Nacional) is the first-tier men’s Professional Basketball league in Argentina. It was founded in 1984, after the merge of two rival leagues, and it is organized by the Argentine Basketball Federation (FeBA).

As of 2020, fourteen teams compete in the tournament. The league follows the double round-robin format, in which all teams play each other twice (home and away games). The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion. There are no playoffs or best-of series.

The season starts in late October or early November, and ends between late March to early May.

The Argentine National Team

The Argentine national Basketball team represents Argentina in basketball international competitions, and is governed by the Argentine Basketball Federation.

The team has been a member of the International Federation of Basketball (FIBA) since 1939. Argentina has also been a member of the South American Basketball Confederation (CONESABA) since 1963.

The team has won a record number of 24 medals at the FIBA World Cup including 5 gold medals They have also won 14 medals at the FIBA AmeriCup, with 6 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze.

The Argentine Women’s National Team

The Argentine women’s national basketball team represents Argentina in international women’s basketball competitions. They are currently ranked 20th in the world by FIBA.

The team has competed at the Summer Olympics four times, with their best result coming in 2008 when they finished in ninth place. They have also reached the Fiba World Championships seven times, with their best result coming in 1998 when they finished in 11th place.

The team is currently coached by lexis Garca.

Argentina made their first appearance at the Summer Olympics in 1976, where they finished 12th. They reached the quarter-finals of the FIBA World Championship for Women for the first time in 1998, where they finished 11th overall. In 2008, they qualified for the Olympics for the second time and went on to finish in ninth place Overall.

The Argentine Under-19 National Team

The Argentine Under-19 national team is the Basketball team that represents Argentina in international under-19 and lower age competitions, and is controlled by the Argentine Basketball Federation (CABB).

The team has taken part in 22 FIBA Under-19 World Championships with their best result coming in 2001, when they finished in 4th place. They have also won 13 South American Championships.

History[edit] Argentina has been one of the dominant forces in international age-group competitions, winning five FIBA Under-19 World Championships (1979, 1995, 2005, 2007, 2011), six FIBA Under-17 World Championships (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013) and six South American Under-17 Championships (2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011). The Argentine Club Teams

Argentina has a Long Basketball tradition. The first recorded basketball game in South America occurred in Buenos Aires in 1912. The game rapidly became popular and by 1921 there were already elections for the organization of an Argentine League, which took place on February 21, 1922. In that first season of the Liga Nacional de Bsquetbol (LNB), which was won by Hispano Argentino, only four teams participated: Banco Nacin, Gimnasia e Ingeniera, Hispano Argentino and Regatas. Gimnasia y Esgrima was the runner-up.

The following year saw the addition of two more teams: Estudiantes de la Plata and Quilmes. After the 1926 season, another team joined the league, Independiente de Avellaneda. Racing Club also joined soon afterwards, while Hispano Argentino stopped participating in 1927 and Gimnasia y Esgrima did likewise in 1928. River Plate (then known as River Plate Ftbol Club) made its debut in 1929 with a team led by Carlos Griguol and Adolfo Pedernera; however, they only stayed one season before returning to their parent sport of football (soccer).

By 1930 there were eight teams in the league: Banco Nacin, Estudiantes de la Plata, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Independiente Rivadavia (from Mendoza), Quilmes, Regatas Corrientes (from Corrientes), San Lorenzo de Almagro and River Plate. This time racing Club stayed longer; nevertheless, it too withdrew from the LNB after one season due to financial problems. These withdrawals reduced the number of teams in the league to seven for 1931.

In 1936 Banco Provincia de Buenos Aires took over Banco Nacin as sponsor of the LNB; as a result that institution withdrew its support for Banco Nacin’s team which then folded.

The Future of Argentine Basketball

Argentina has a long and proud history in basketball, with the sport having been introduced to the country in the early 20th century. Despite its relatively small population, Argentina has consistently punched above its weight in international competitions, winning multiple Olympic and World Championship medals. In recent years however, the country’s basketball fortunes have waned somewhat, with a number of high-profile players opting to ply their trade abroad. Nevertheless, there is still a strong core of Argentine players making their mark in the NBA and other top professional leagues around the world, and the future looks bright for the sport in the country.
