Baseball Threads
Today, we’re going to be talking about baseball threads. No, not the ones that hold your pants up (although those are important too), but the decorative stitches that adorn baseballs. Even if you’re not a big fan of America’s pastime, you have to admit that these tiny pieces of string are pretty darned cool.
So what exactly are baseball threads? They’re the red and blue stitches that criss-cross a baseball, holding together the cowhide cover. And contrary to popular belief, they’re not all sewn by hand – only about 30% are. The rest are machine stitched, using a special diamond-tipped needle.
These days, there are only two companies in the world that make baseball threads: Perlon and Terko. Perlon is based in Germany, and Terko is based in Japan. Interestingly enough, both companies use similar methods to produce their threads. First, the raw materials – nylon or polyester – are melted down and formed into small pellets. These pellets are then fed into a spinning machine, where they’re turned into thread.
Once the thread is spun, it’s time to dye it. For red thread, a common choice is to use Cochineal extract – which is actually made from ground-up insects! For blue thread, synthetic indigo dyes are usually used. Once the thread is dyed, it’s time to wax it. This gives the thread a bit of added strength and makes it less likely to fray or break while it’s being sewn onto a baseball.
After the waxing process is complete, the threads are finally ready to be shipped off to baseball factories all over the world. And there you have it – everything you ever wanted to know about baseball threads!

The Media
The media has been tough on baseball this season. While the game has seen a surge in popularity in recent years attendance is down and television ratings have dipped. Critics have blamed baseball’s “slow pace” and “lack of action” for its decline, but the real issue may be the product on the field.
