Choose your pumpkin

You can’t have a basketball pumpkin without a pumpkin! Ideally, you want to find a small to medium sized pumpkin that is round and uniform in shape. You also want to make sure that the pumpkin has a smooth surface without any major blemishes or blemishes.

Prep your pumpkin

Get a medium to large pumpkin. The ones that are sold specifically for carving work best, but any pumpkin will do in a pinch. You’ll also need a sharp knife and a large spoon.

Start by cutting off the top of the pumpkin, about 2-3 inches from the stem. You’ll want to cut at an angle so that the lid can be placed back on later. Next, use the spoon to scoop out all of the guts and seeds from the inside of the pumpkin. You can save the seeds to roast later if you’d like.

Once your pumpkin is clean on the inside, it’s time to start carving. You can use a sharp knife to freehand a design, or you can print out a stencil and tape it to the pumpkin before carving. If you’re using a stencil, use a sharp knife to carefully carve around the design. Be sure to only carve through the top layer of skin; you don’t want to cut all the way through the pumpkin.

Once your design is carved, replace the lid on top of the pumpkin and voila! You’ve got yourself a basketball-themed jack-o’-lantern perfect for any Halloween party or holiday gathering.

Cut out the top of the pumpkin

Use a sharp knife to cut out the top of the pumpkin, making sure to cut at an angle so the lid can be replaced later. Then, use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to remove the guts of the pumpkin, scraping the sides until they are clean.

Scoop out the insides of the pumpkin

Start by cutting a hole in the top of the pumpkin large enough to fit your hand inside. Then, use a large spoon to scoop out the pumpkin’s insides, being careful not to damage the outer shell.

Draw your basketball design on the pumpkin

To make your own basketball pumpkin, start by drawing your design on the pumpkin with a permanent marker. Then, using a carving knife, cut along the lines of your design. Next, scoop out the pumpkin guts and seeds. Once your pumpkin is hollowed out, place a piece of cardboard inside to act as a backboard. Finally, use a black Sharpie to draw a Free Throw Line on the cardboard.

Cut out your design

The first step is to cut out your design. You will need to use a sharp knife to cut around the outline of your pumpkin. If you are not comfortable with this, you can always ask someone else to do it for you.
Once you have cut out your design, you will need to remove the top of the pumpkin. This is so that you can scoop out the inside of the pumpkin and carve your design into it.
Once you have removed the top of the pumpkin, use a spoon to scoop out the inside of the pumpkin. Be sure to remove all of the seeds and pulp.
Once you have scooped out the inside of the pumpkin, you can begin carving your design into it. Use a sharp knife to carve around the outline of your design.
Once you have carved your design, place a candle inside of the pumpkin and replace the top.

Paint or carve your pumpkin

Your first step is to decide whether you want to paint or carve your basketball pumpkin. If you want to paint your pumpkin, you can either use a regular paintbrush or a stencil. If you want to carve your pumpkin, you’ll need a sharp carving knife and a template.

Once you’ve decided how you want to decorate your pumpkin, it’s time to get started! If you’re painting your pumpkin, start by painting the entire pumpkin with a base coat of orange paint. Once the base coat is dry, use either a paintbrush or stencil to add black lines onto the pumpkin to create a basketball motif.

If you’re carving your pumpkin, start by printing out or tracing a basketball template onto the front of the pumpkin. Use a sharp carving knife to cut out the design. When you’re finished carving, use a black marker or paintbrush to add details like seams or lace on the basketball.

Light up your pumpkin

In order to light up your pumpkin, you will need:
-a small pumpkin
-a drill
-a light bulb (preferably LED)
-light bulb socket
-electrical tape
-two small wiggle eyes
First, take your drill and make a hole in the back of the pumpkin, big enough to fit the circumference of your light bulb. Next, insert the light bulb into the socket and then screw the socket into the hole you just made. Once the socket is secure, use electrical tape to cover any exposed wires. Finally, add two small wiggle eyes to the front of the pumpkin and voila! You now have a basketball pumpkin that lights up!

Show off your finished pumpkin

Once you’ve completed carving your pumpkin, it’s time to show it off! You can set your creation on a doorstep or windowsill, or take it a step further and create a basketball-themed display.

If you’re using a battery-operated candle to light your pumpkin, place it inside the carved pumpkin and turn it on. If you’re using a real candle, carefully place the lit candle inside the pumpkin and put the lid back on.
