The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Hockey Program

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Hockey Program is one of the most successful in the state of Minnesota. The program has won six State Championships four in Class A and two in Class AA. In addition, the program has produced numerous collegiate and professional players, including several NHL players

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Hockey Tradition

It all started in the winter of 1967, when a group of students at Benilde High School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota decided to start a Hockey Team With no ice rink of their own, the team practiced on a outdoor rink, and played its first game against a local Catholic high school

The team quickly gained a following among the student body and the community, and soon began to experience success on the ice. In 1970, the team won its first state championship and would go on to win four more in the next decade.

In 1980, Benilde-St. Margaret’s joined the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), and has been competing at the varsity level ever since. The tradition of excellence continued, with the team winning state championships in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2006. In addition to these state titles, the team has also won numerous conference championships and tournament titles.

Over the years, Benilde-St. Margaret’s has produced many outstanding players who have gone on to successful careers in college and Professional Hockey In 1998, three Benilde-St. Margaret’s alumni – Blake Wheeler (Boston Bruins), Tyler Arnason (Ottawa Senators) and Andy Hilbert (Chicago Blackhawks) – made their debuts in the National Hockey League (NHL). To date, Wheeler is the only Benilde-St. Margaret’s alum to have won a Stanley Cup championship (with the Boston Bruins in 2011).

The Red Knights have won eight State Championships since 1995, including five in a row from 2013 to 2017. They are also a perennial power at the national level, having won the USA Hockey National high school Championship in 2012 and finishing as runner-up in 2016.

The tradition of excellence at Benilde-St. Margaret’s began with Head Coach Ken Luedtke, who led the Red Knights to their first state title in 1995. Luedtke’s successor, Bill Lechner, continued the team’s success, winning four State Championships in six years from 2013 to 2018. current head coach Tyler Hirsch has also kept the winning tradition alive, leading the Red Knights to three straight state titles from 2019 to 2021.

According to Head Coach Ken Pauly, it starts with the commitment of the school and the community to provide the best possible environment for the student-athletes.

“We have great facilities, a passionate fan base, and a commitment from the school to provide everything our players need to be successful,” Pauly said. “It’s a great place to Play Hockey

Pauly also crediting the program’s success to its ability to attract top talent. He said that many of the program’s best players have come from outside of Minnesota, including forwards Tyler Vesel (Omaha, Neb.) and Tom Novak (St. Cloud, Minn.).

“We’ve been fortunate to have some Great players come through our program,” Pauly said. “We’ve had guys come from all over the country to play here, and that’s helped us become one of the top programs in the country.”
