How one blind basketball player is making a difference

Meet Nick Gerber, a High School senior who is blind and also the starting point guard for his basketball team the Pioneers. He is the only player on his team with a disability, but that doesn’t stop him from giving his all on the court.

Gerber was born with retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the retina, and had his left eye removed when he was just a baby. He decided to try out for the Basketball team in high school and has been playing ever since.

While it may seem like Gerber is at a disadvantage when playing against sighted opponents, he actually uses his disability to his advantage. Because he can’t see the other players, he has to rely on his other senses to anticipate their movements. This helps him stay one step ahead of the competition.

Gerber is an inspiration to both his teammates and opponents. He strives to show everyone that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

The inspiring story of a young man who is overcoming adversity

Sport has always been a huge part of my life. I love the feeling of being part of a team, working together towards a common goal and the sense of camaraderie that comes with it. So, when I was diagnosed with sight loss at the age of 12, I thought my sporting career was over.

However, I was determined not to let my vision loss stop me from doing what I love and, with the support of my family and friends, I decided to give basketball a try.

I’ll admit, it was tough at first. I couldn’t see the ball properly and kept missing shots. But I kept practicing and slowly but surely started to improve.

Now, aged 21, I am an active member of Great Britain’s Blind basketball team and have represented my country at both European and World level. And, next year, I will be competing at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo!

Obviously, sight loss brings with it some unique challenges but it hasn’t stopped me from achieving my dreams. Nor has it stopped me from making a difference in the world. In fact, through my work with the British Blind Sport charity, I am helping to change attitudes towards blindness and show that anything is possible if you put your mind to it!
