Bucknell Field hockey A Tradition of Excellence

Bucknell University’s field Hockey Team has a long and proud tradition of excellence. The team has won 14 Patriot League championships and made seven NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2006. The Bison have also produced 17 All-Americans, 22 Academic All-Americans and seven NFHCA Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Bucknell Field Hockey is coached by Jillian Loyden, who was named the 2017 NFHCA Division I Coach of the Year after leading the Bison to their first Patriot League title in 10 years. Loyden, a former U.S. national team goalkeeper, is one of only two active Division I head coaches with an Olympic medal (she won a bronze medal as the backup goalkeeper for Team USA at the 2012 London Games).

The 2017 Bison squad featured eight NFHCA Scholar-Athletes of the Year, including four first-Team selections and four second-team picks. The team also had 11 Academic All-Americans, led by first-Team selections Sarah Parking and Abby Watson.

The History of Bucknell Field Hockey

The history of Bucknell Field Hockey is one of tradition and excellence. The program was started in 1974 by Coach Ginny Logue, who led the team to its first ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 1976. Since then, the team has made 16 additional NCAA Tournament appearances, including five straight from 2013-2017. In total, Bucknell has won six Patriot League championships and made seven appearances in the league’s tournament title game.

Under Logue’s guidance, the program quickly became a national power, as the team earned a spot in the NCAA Division I tournament in just its third season of existence. The 1976 squad finished with a 13-5 record and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual National Champion Old Dominion. Logue guided Bucknell to five more NCAA tournament appearances during her tenure, highlighted by a trip to the Elite Eight in 1983. Logue retired following the 1991 season as the winningest coach in program history with 158 victories.

The Bucknell Field Hockey Coaches

Since the beginning of Bucknell Field Hockey in 1974, the program has been defined by a tradition of excellence. The team has won numerous conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA Tournament Under the guidance of Head Coach Kirsten Little, the team has continued to thrive, ranking among the top teams in the nation year after year.

But it isn’t just Little who has helped build the Bucknell Field Hockey program into what it is today. The team’s success is also due in large part to its assistant coaches Jen Ketz and Katie Hermann.

Ketz, a former All-American at Gettysburg College has been with the Bison for almost two decades. During her time at Bucknell, she has helped guide the team to six Patriot League titles and three NCAA tournament appearances.

Hermann, meanwhile, joined the Bucknell staff in 2014 after serving as an Assistant Coach at La Salle University In her five years with the Bison, she has played a key role in helping the team win three Patriot League championships and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

The team’s student section known as the “Bucknell Bison Herd,” is especially spirited and creative. They often dress up in costume and lead the cheers throughout the game. The Herd also organizes special events, such as a pre-game pep rally, to get everyone pumped up for the big game
