Why Cal U Baseball is on the Rise

In recent years Cal U baseball has been on the rise, becoming one of the top Division I teams in the country. The team has seen success thanks to a combination of talented players, dedicated coaching, and support from the community. Here are some of the reasons why Cal U baseball is on the rise:

How the Team has Improved

The team has seen a lot of success in recent years due in large part to the great coaching of Head Coach Steve Folmer and his staff. The team has made the playoffs in four of the last five years, including a trip to the Division I College World Series in 2017. The team is made up of mostly underclassmen and will look to continue their success in the years to come.

The Players to Watch

As the Cal U baseball team continues to make its mark on Division I, there are a few players who stand out as athletes to watch.

Pitcher Luke Johnson is one player who has been making waves on the mound. In his freshman year, he was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and was a perfect 6-0 in conference play He followed that up with an even better sophomore season, going 9-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 84 strikeouts.

Another player to keep an eye on is center fielder Josh Mitchell. As a junior, Mitchell led the team in batting average (.375), hits (75), home runs (11), and stolen bases (20). He was also named First Team All-Horizon League

The Coaching Staff

In order to build a successful baseball program you need a great coaching staff The coaches at Cal U are some of the best in the business and have helped lead the team to success on the field.

Head coach Steve Owens is in his fourth season with the Vulcans and has led the team to two Division I conference championships Owens was named the conference Coach of the Year in both 2016 and 2017.

Assistant Coach Drew Eliopoulos is in his second season with the Vulcans and has helped the team to a conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Assistant coach Nick Kouthis is in his first season with the Vulcans and has helped the team to a Conference Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Pitching coach Will Stokes is in his first season with the Vulcans and has helped the team to a conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I tournament.

The Facilities

Cal U’s baseball facilities are second to none in Division I. The $10 million Robert P.sslConfState Gerhard Field Complex was completed in 2019 and features a Turf Field an indoor hitting facility, locker rooms a weight room, meeting space and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.

The field complex is named for alumni and former baseball coach Bob Gerhard, who led the Vulcans to five Division II National Championship appearances during his 20 seasons at the helm.

The Vulcans have won four PSAC championships since moving to Division I in 2006, and they made their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2019.

The Schedule

The 2017 California University Of Pennsylvania Vulcans baseball team looks to build off a successful 2016 campaign in which the team went 28-22 and earned a trip to the Atlantic regional tournament The Vulcans will play a 56 game regular season schedule in 2017, with 28 home games at the newly renovated Bailey Field. The Vulcans will play conference series against Mercyhurst, West Virginia Wesleyan, Seton Hill Charleston, and Fairmont State. Nonconference games include trips to Marshall, Pittsburgh, Kent State and West Virginia

The Fans

The fans of Cal U baseball are some of the most passionate in Division I. They love their team and are always there to support them, whether they’re winning or losing. They are also very supportive of the community, fundraising for various causes and attending events to show their support.

The Future

The future of the Cal U baseball team is looking bright. Thanks to the tireless efforts of head coach John Miller and his staff, the team has recruited some of the best young talent in the country. With this influx of new talent, the team is poised to make a run at the Division I championship.

In recent years the school has invested heavily in its Baseball Program building a new stadium and expanding its training facilities.
