The team was founded in 1933 by Father James Gibbons, who was the school’s principal at the time. Father Gibbons wanted to start a baseball team to give the students an outlet for their talents and to instill in them the values of teamwork and sportsmanship.

The team quickly became a power, winning the state championship in its first year of existence. The following year, the team won the National Championship It would go on to win several more state and national championships in the years that followed.

In addition to its success on the field, Cardinal Gibbons baseball has also been successful in producing Major League baseball players More than 40 former Gibbons players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues including Hall of Famer Goose Gossage

The team trains at the Cardinal Gibbons Baseball Academy a state-of-the-art facility that includes a hitting tunnel, pitching lanes, batting cages, and a weight room. The academy is also home to the Cardinal Gibbons Baseball Museum which houses memorabilia from the team’s illustrious history.

Under his guidance, the program has won nine State Championships and appeared in the NHSBCA National Championships five times (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016). In 2009, they were crowned National Champions

Cardinal Gibbons baseball is one of the most successful programs in the state of North Carolina The Crusaders have won nine State Championships including six in the last seven years.

The program has been built on a foundation of hard work dedication and a commitment to excellence. head coach Mikeairo Esposito has instilled a culture of winning, and the players have bought into his vision.

The team has been led by some of the best players in the state, including pitcher Matt Lipscomb, who was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2017. Lipscomb led the Crusaders to a perfect 27-0 record and a state championship

Other Key Players have include shortstop Cole Zuurveen, who was named the State Player of the Year in 2018, and third baseman Lukefed Soto, who was named to the All-State team in 2019.

This year, our team made it to the playoffs for the first time in 3 years and we are determined to build on that success. We have a lot of young talent on our team and we are excited to see what they can do in the coming years.
