Catawba College Infielders

Catawba College has a long tradition of success on the baseball diamond and that tradition starts with its infielders. These are the players who man the critical positions of first base, second base, shortstop, and third base. They are often the leaders on the field, and they set the tone for the rest of the team.

The Catawba College infielders for 2020 are:

First baseman Nick Daulton is a senior from Raleigh, NC. He is a three-year starter for the Catawba Indians and has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters over that time. He is a career .300 hitter with 24 home runs and 121 RBIs. Daulton was named first-team All-South Atlantic Conference (SAC) as a junior after hitting .338 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs. He was also named to the SAC All-Tournament team.

Second baseman Will Albertson is a junior from Newton, NC. He is a two-year starter who transferred to Catawba from Division I Appalachian State University Albertson is a career .288 hitter with four home runs and 54 RBIs. He was named honorable mention All-SAC as a sophomore after hitting .276 with two Home Runs and 30 RBIs.

Shortstop Connor Johnson is a senior from Charlotte, NC. He is a three-year starter who has been one of Catawba’s most dependable defenders over that time. Johnson is not known as a big hitter, but he has batted over .270 in each of his last two seasons. He had a career-high .292 batting average as a junior with one home run and 28 RBIs.

Third baseman Clay Carlyle is a senior from Buffalo, NY. Carlyle is another three-year starter who has been one of Catawba’s top power hitters during his time with the Indians. Carlyle has hit 37 home runs and driven in 133 RBIs during his career. He was twice named first-team All-SAC (2017 & 2018) and was named to the SAC All-Tournament team in 2017 & 2018 as well.

Catawba College Pitchers

Catawba College has released its baseball roster for the upcoming season The team will feature a mix of experienced players and newcomers, with a strong pitching staff leading the way.

The pitchers are as follows:

Drew Wright, a senior from Charlotte, North Carolina will be the team’s ace. He has pitched three seasons for Catawba and has been consistently excellent, posting a career ERA of 3.22. He will be looked to as the leader of the staff and will be counted on to anchor the rotation.

Joining Wright in the rotation will be junior right-hander Ryan Bostian from Mooresville, North Carolina and sophomore lefty Brayden Houchins from Waxhaw, North Carolina Bostian had a strong sophomore campaign, going 7-4 with a 4.24 ERA, while Houchins was impressive as a freshman, going 6-3 with a 3.86 ERA.

The bullpen will be anchored by senior closer Ryan Weathers from Kernersville, North Carolina Weathers was outstanding last season, saving nine games while posting a 1.93 ERA. He will be joined by junior right-handers Matt Frisbee from Lexington, North Carolina and Casey Hodges from Albemarle, North Carolina Frisbee had a solid year out of the bullpen last season, going 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 27 appearances, while Hodges is coming off an injury-plagued sophomore campaign in which he appeared in just four games.

The Catawba College baseball team represents Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina The school’s team currently competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the South Atlantic Conference The team has appeared in two NCAA Division II College World Series and has won four conference championships (1987, 1989, 2012, 2018). As of the end of the 2019 season, the program has an all-time record of 1,478–1,367–31.

The Catawba Indians baseball team plays its home games at Newman Park on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina The park opened in 1951 and has a capacity of 1,000 people.
