The History of Cooper Basketball

Cooper Basketball began in the late 1800s as a way for the students of Cooper Union to stay active and compete against other schools. The first intercollegiate game was played in 1892 against Rutgers University and the team continued to compete against other colleges and clubs in the New York area. In the early years, the games were often played on outdoor courts, which made for some interesting weather conditions!

The popularity of basketball continued to grow at Cooper, and in the early 1900s, the school built an indoor court on the roof of one of its buildings. This allowed the team to practice and play its games year-round, regardless of weather conditions. The Cooper Union basketball team quickly developed a reputation as a tough opponent, and in 1909, they won the intercollegiate championship of New York State

Over the next few decades, Cooper Union continued to be competitive in basketball, frequently playing teams from Manhattan and Brooklyn. In 1947, they even played against Harvard University! In recent years Cooper Basketball has shifted its focus to becoming a place for everyone in the community to enjoy playing basketball Whether you’re looking for a competitive game or just a place to shoot some hoops with friends, Cooper Basketball is the place for you.
