D’Youville Baseball Roster: Players to Watch This Season

The D’Youville baseball team is off to a great start this season, and there are a few players that are really standing out. Here’s a look at the roster and who to keep an eye on this season.

D’Youville baseball roster Players to Watch This Season

With the start of the college baseball season just around the corner, we thought it’d be fun to put together a list of players to watch on the D’Youville Baseball Team this year. It was tough to narrow it down, but here are our top five:

1. Jimmy Cervantes – Cervantes is a senior captain and four-year starter who is one of the most experienced players on the team. He’s a versatile player who can play both infield and outfield, and he’s a strong hitter with a career batting average of .320. Cervantes is also one of the team’s best Defensive Players having committed just four errors in his career.

2. Alex Loecher – Loecher is a junior pitcher who was named Second Team All-Conference last year after going 6-3 with a 2.96 ERA. He’s got great control, having walked just 18 batters in 68 innings pitched last season, and he doesn’t give up many home runs – he surrendered just two long balls all of last year. Loecher will be one of the anchors of the pitching staff this season.

3. Josh Mitchell – Mitchell is a junior transfer from Canisius College who will immediately become one of the team’s top hitters. In his two years at Canisius, Mitchell hit .333 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs. He has exceptional power and should provide a big boost to the D’Youville offense this season.

4. Ryan Covert – Covert is a sophomore pitcher who made great strides last season as he transitioned from reliever to starter. He finished the year with a 4-2 record and a 3.86 ERA, and he struck out 46 batters in 62 innings pitched. Covert will be counted on to take another step forward this season as he continues to develop into one of the team’s top starters.

5. Nate Ferragine – Ferragine is a freshman infielder who comes to D’Youville with high expectations after being named First Team All-State in High School last year. Ferragine hit .500 with eight homers and 35 RBIs as a senior, so it’s clear that he has the potential to be an elite hitter at the collegiate level. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to playing against better competition, but Ferragine has all the tools to be a star player for D’Youville Baseball

Catchers

The D’Youville Spartans baseball team is off to a great start this season, with a record of 10-2. A big reason for their success has been the play of their catchers. In the infield, there are three spots up for grabs. at first base, junior Timmy Walsh and sophomore Matt Murphy are both vying for the starting job. Shortstop is also up for grabs, with junior John O’Brien and freshman Mike Santos battling it out. O’Brien has been the starter for the past two seasons, but Santos is a very talented player who could take his spot.

The only set position in the infield is third base, where senior captain Jake Michaels will be back as the starter. Michaels is a very good player and should have another solid season.

In the outfield, there are also three spots up for grabs. In left field junior Ryan Thompson and sophomore Nick Martin are both vying for the starting job. Thompson was the starter last year but didn’t have a great season offensively. Martin is a transfer from another school and is an unknown commodity at this point.
