Eastern Washington Basketball

Eastern Washington men’s basketball is a college basketball program that competes in the Big Sky Conference of NCAA Division I. The school is located in Cheney, Washington, a suburb of Spokane. The team plays its home games at Reese Court on the campus of Eastern Washington University

The Eagles have appeared in four NCAA Division I Tournaments. Their combined record is 3–4. They made their most recent appearance in 2018, where they defeated UNC Asheville in the First Four before losing to Kentucky in the Round of 64.

The current Head Coach is Shantay Legans, who was hired on April 11, 2019, replacing Jim Hayford who resigned to take the same position at Seattle University Hayford had led the team to three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament prior to his departure.

Who’s Who?

The Eastern Washington University Eagles men’s Basketball team is a College Basketball program representing Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.

The school competes in the Big Sky Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Eagles have appeared in five NCAA tournaments. Their combined record is 1–5.

Eastern Washington has had eighteen All-Big Sky selections since 1977 (when the conference began sponsoring men’s basketball), two Big Sky Conference Players of the Year, and four Big Sky Conference Coaches of the Year.

The Starters

The starting lineup for the Eastern Washington men’s basketball team includes five seniors: Josh Unclemueller, Ty Gibson, Jacob Davison, Tanner Groves, and Mason Peatling.

Unclemueller, a 6-8 forward from Walla Walla, is the Eagles’ leading scorer and rebounder. Gibson, a 6-4 guard from Spokane, is the team’s second-leading scorer. Davison, a 6-4 guard from Yakima, is a Three-point shooting specialist. Groves, a 6-7 forward from Medical Lake, is a versatile player who can score inside and out. Peatling, a 6-10 center from Vancouver, Washington, rounds out the starting lineup with his size and shot-blocking ability.

The Eagles are coached by Jim Hayford, who is in his tenth season at the helm of the program. Hayford has led the Eagles to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2015.

The Coach

Jim Hayford is in his sixth season as the head men’s basketball coach at Eastern Washington University Under his guidance, the Eagles have compiled a 129-88 (.593) overall record and have advanced to the postseason four times, including a pair of trips to the NCAA tournament (2015, 2017).

In 2017-18, the Eagles went 16-17 overall and 11-7 in Big Sky conference play to finish in fourth place. They also won their first-ever season game under Hayford, defeating UC Davis 77-68 in the Opening Round of the College Basketball Invitational before falling to Weber State in the quarterfinals.

Prior to his arrival at EWU, Hayford spent 10 seasons as the Head Coach at Seattle University He led the Redhawks to nine winning seasons, including a 22-10 mark in 2008-09 that was the school’s best since 1994. Seattle also advanced to postseason play six times under Hayford, reaching the NCAA tournament twice (2009, 2010) and winning the WBI championship in 2011.
