EIU Baseball: A team on the Rise-You
The EIU baseball team is one of the most improved teams in recent memory. After winning only 12 games in 2016, the Panthers turned things around in a big way in 2017, finishing the year with a 34-22 record. The team’s success can be attributed to a number of factors, chief among them being the play of senior ace pitcher Michael Goforth.
Goforth, who was named first-team all-conference and second-team all-region, turned in one of the best seasons by a Panthers pitcher in recent years. He led the team in wins (9), ERA (3.48), strikeouts (102), and innings pitched (113.1). Goforth was especially dominant down the stretch, winning his last five starts of the season and posting a 2.70 ERA over that span.
The future looks bright for EIU Baseball, as the team returns a number of Key Players from last year’s squad. If Goforth can anchor the pitching staff once again, and the team’s young hitters continue to develop, there’s no reason why EIU couldn’t make a run at a conference championship in 2018.
