Contents
It’s game day for the Baseball Super Regional Tournament! Who will take home the win and move on to the College World Series?
game day what to expect
baseball season is in Full Swing and that means the post-season is just around the corner. The excitement of the playoffs and World Series is palpable. But if you’re new to baseball, or haven’t followed the sport in a while, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Here’s a quick guide to get you up to speed on America’s Favorite Pastime
Whether you’re watching on TV or in person, game day is all about the opportunity to root for your team and enjoy some good food and drink. At the ballpark, you’ll find concession stands selling hot dogs pretzels, peanuts, and crackerjacks (a sugary snack made of popcorn and peanuts). And of course, there’s always beer. In terms of attire, it’s not uncommon to see fans wearing their team’s jersey or hat.
The game itself is split into innings, with each team having a chance to bat and score runs The team with the most runs at the end of the ninth inning (or after seven innings if one team is ahead by more than five runs) wins the game. One thing to keep in mind is that baseball games can go on for a while – sometimes four hours or more! So be sure to settle in and get comfortable.
Now that you know what to expect on game day, all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy the show.
How the tournament works
The tournament is a double-elimination format. Eight teams play in four, two-team brackets.
The winners of each bracket advance to the College World Series The losers of the first round play an elimination game, with the winner advancing to the second round and the loser being eliminated from the tournament.
The second round is played between the four remaining teams, two from each bracket. The winners advance to the College World Series and the losers play an elimination game.
The third round is played between the three remaining teams, one from each bracket. The winners advance to the College World Series and the losers play an elimination game.
The fourth and final round is played between the two remaining teams. The winner of this game advances to the College World Series while the loser is eliminated from the tournament.
Who’s playing?
Fourteen teams from across the country have been chosen to compete in the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Super Regionals The winner of each best-of-three series will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
The following teams will be competing in the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Super Regionals
Clemson University
Louisiana State University
University of Miami (Florida)
University of Oklahoma
Oregon State University
Stanford University
Texas A&M University
What teams are in the running?
The second full weekend of the college baseball season is upon us, and that means it’s time for the NCAA tournament to crown a champion. The top 16 seeds will host a best-of-three series this weekend, with the winner advancing to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series
Here’s a look at the teams that are in the running for a trip to the CWS.
1. Florida
The Gators are hosting their eighth consecutive Super Regional and are looking to return to Omaha for the first time since 2016. They’ll take on Auburn in what should be a pitching-heavy series.
2. Stanford
The Cardinal are looking to make their first trip to Omaha since 2008, and they’ll have a tough road ahead as they take on Mississippi State The Bulldogs are one of the best hitting teams in the country and will be looking to take advantage of Stanford’s pitching staff.
3. Vanderbilt
The defending National Champions are back in the Super Regional round and will take on Duke. The Blue Devils have one of the best pitchers in the country in Mike Matuella, but Vanderbilt has one of the deepest rosters in all of college baseball
4. Louisville
The Cardinals are back in the Super Regional round for the second straight year and will take on Texas A&M. The Aggies have one of the best hitters in the country in JB Bukauskas, but Louisville has been pitching well lately and will look to continue that trend this weekend.
What are the odds?
In baseball, as in life, anything can happen. But what are the odds? Let’s take a look at the outcomes of the last ten NCAA Division I Baseball Super Regionals and see if we can find any patterns.
From 2006 to 2015, there have been 160 Super Regional games played The home team has won 103 of those games, or 64.4%. That championship-caliber teams would win more often on their home turf shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the degree to which home teams have an advantage is interesting.
Of the remaining 57 games that were won by the away team, 44 were won by the higher-seeded team and just 13 by the lower-seeded team. In other words, in Super Regional games where the away team won, they were almost four times as likely to be the higher-seeded team.
So what does this all mean for this year’s tournament? If you’re a fan of one of the lower-seeded teams playing on the road, you might want to tempered your expectations a bit. But if you’re rooting for one of the top seeds playing at home, you can probably rest easy knowing that history is on your side.
How did they get here?
The journey to the 2019 College World Series has been a long one for the eight teams that have qualified for the Super Regional round. Here’s a look at how each team made it to this point.
What’s at stake?
Much more than a trophy.
When it comes to the college baseball playoffs, the Super Regional round is when things really start to heat up. After two weeks of regional action, the field has been whittled down to just 16 teams, and each of them has their sights set on Omaha and the College World Series
But what exactly is at stake in a super regional? Well, first and foremost, there’s the matter of pride. These are some of the best teams in the country, and they’re all going to be giving it their all to try and advance.
Beyond that, though, there’s also a lot of money on the line. Each team that makes it to a super regional is guaranteed to receive at least $300,000 in prize money. And if they can win their super regional and make it to Omaha? They’re looking at a payout of $1.7 million.
So yeah, there’s a lot riding on these games. If you’re a fan of college baseball you won’t want to miss a single pitch.
What are the fans saying?
As the Game Day Super Regional Baseball Tournament approaches, fans are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting event. While some fans are die-hard supporters of their team, others are simply looking forward to enjoying the games and rooting for their favorite players
No matter what your level of interest is, it’s always fun to see what others are saying about the upcoming tournament. Here are some of the things fans are saying on social media
“Can’t wait for the Game Day Super Regional Baseball Tournament! My team is going to take it all!”
“I’m so excited to see all of the Great players in action. This is going to be a really fun event.”
“I love baseball and I can’t wait to see some great games. Go team!”
Game day predictions
It’s that time of year again. The college baseball postseason is upon us, and that means it’s time to make some game day predictions. The first round of the tournament is the Super Regionals, which is a best-of-three series between the winners of each Regional. There are eight super regionals being played this weekend, and here are my predictions for each one:
Texas A&M vs. Davidson
Texas A&M will win this series 2-1. Davidson has a good team, but the Aggies are simply too strong. They have one of the best pitching staffs in the country, and that will be the difference in this series.
Stanford vs. Florida State
This is a tough one to call, but I’m going with Stanford in a close series. The Cardinal have been one of the most consistent teams in the country all season, and I think they’ll find a way to win this series.
Arkansas vs. Ole Miss
Arkansas will win this series 2-0. The Razorbacks are one of the best teams in the country, and they’re Playing at home. Ole Miss is good, but Arkansas is simply too strong.
Louisville vs Vanderbilt
Louisville will win this series 2-1. Vanderbilt is a good team, but Louisville has been one of the best teams in the country all season. The Cardinals have simply been too good to pick against them in this series.
