George Mason University’s men’s basketball team is a Division I college basketball program that competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). The Patriots play their home games at the Bank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

Mason began play in 1966 as an independent school before joining the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in 1980. In 2001, the Patriots joined the A-10 after the CAA dropped football.

Under longtime Head Coach Paul Hewitt, Mason reached the 2006 Final Four—becoming the first mid-major team to do so since 1979—and has been regularly competitive since joining the A-10. The Patriots have appeared in ten NCAA Tournaments (1986, 1989, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2013), while earning five berths to the National Invitation Tournament (1995, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2002).

Mason’s most recent appearance in the NCAA Tournament came in 2019 under head coach Dave Paulsen. The Patriots defeated Saint Louis in their First Four matchup before losing to LSU in the Round of 64.

George Mason University’s men’s Basketball team commonly known as the Mason Patriots, is a NCAA Division I college basketball team representing George Mason University located in Fairfax, Virginia. The series is currently led by Old Dominion 38-26. This rivalry intensified in recent years as both teams have become more successful nationally.

Finally, there is George Mason’s rivalry with University of Richmond. These two teams first played each other in 1977 and have been playing each other periodically since then. Notably, they played each other 3 times during George Mason’s magical run to the Final Four in 2006.
