Grand Island has a long tradition of excellence in basketball. The boys’ team has won the state championship five times, in 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1962. The girls’ team has also been very successful, winning the state championship in 1995 and 1996.
Grand Island High School has produced many successful basketball players who have gone on to play at the college level and beyond. Some of the most famous names include Bob Dandridge, who played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Washington Bullets Dick Garrett, who played for the New York Knicks and Doug Collins who played for the Chicago Bulls and is now a television commentator.

The Grand Island Basketball Legacy
For more than 50 years, Grand Island Senior high school has been a powerhouse in Nebraska high school basketball. The Islanders have won 27 state championships more than any other school in the state, and have produced some of the most memorable moments and teams in state history.
Grand Island Senior high school first won a state Basketball Championship in 1966, under Head Coach Gene Keady. The team was led by star player Larry Drew, who went on to have a successful career in the NBA. Since then, the Islanders have won titles in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 and 2018.
The Islanders have also produced a number of outstanding players who have gone on to have successful careers at the collegiate and professional levels. Among the most notable are Drew (Kansas/NBA), Doug McDermott (Creighton/NBA), Jason Kosmicki (Nebraska/NBA) and Scott Wedman (Colorado/NBA).
