Hardin Basketball was founded in 1896 and has won two NCAA Division I championships, in 1998 and 2000. The team has also appeared in the NCAA Division I tournament ten times, most recently in 2019. The Bulldogs are coached by Mike Montgomery, who is in his sixth season with the team.

Izzo has been the head coach of the Spartans for over 20 years and has led the team to eight Final Fours, including a National Championship in 2000. assistant coaches Dwayne Stephens and Jim Boylen round out the Coaching Staff Stephens has been with Izzo for over 15 years, while Boylen is in his first season with the Spartans.
