The Rules of Hockey – How is the game played?
Hockey is a sport that is played by two teams on a sheet of ice. The object of the game is to score goals by shooting a hard rubber disc, called a puck, into the opponent’s net using a hockey stick
There are three periods in a Hockey Game each lasting 20 minutes. The clock is stopped whenever the puck goes out of play or a stoppage in play is called by the referee. At the end of regulation time, if the score is tied, then Overtime periods are played. These periods are Sudden death – meaning that the first team to score wins the game – and they are usually five minutes long. If no team scores during overtime, then the game ends in a tie.
Each team has six players on the ice at one time, made up of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender. The forwards are responsible for scoring goals while the defensemen tries to stop them from being scored against their own team. The goaltender’s main job is to stop the puck from going into his own net.
Players can be sent to “the penalty box” for violating rules. While in “the sin bin” they have to sit for two minutes and their team has to play short-handed for that time period. If a major infraction occurs, such as fighting or deliberately injuring another player, then five or ten minutes may be given instead.
