The Indiana Basketball Wiki is a collaborative site about the history of Indiana University Basketball.

History

The Indiana basketball team began play in 1903. The Hoosiers have won five NCAA Championships and 27 conference championships They have played in 44 NCAA tournaments and have appeared in the National Invitation Tournament 27 times. The team is currently coached by Tom Crean.

Championships

The Indiana Hoosiers have won five NCAA Division I Men’s basketball championships in 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, and 1987. They have also won two National Invitation Tournaments (NIT), in 1979 and 1992.

Indiana has produced a number of great basketball players over the years, including some who have gone on to have successful careers in the NBA. Here are some of the most notable players in Indiana history:

--Larry Bird One of the greatest players of all time, Bird led the Indiana State University Sycamores to a 33-1 record and an NCAA tournament appearance in 1979. He went on to have a legendary career with the Boston Celtics winning three NBA championships and becoming one of the game’s most iconic players.

--Isiah Thomas Another all-time great, Thomas played for Bobby Knight at Indiana University from 1979 to 1981. He helped lead the Hoosiers to a National Championship in 1981, and he went on to have a stellar NBA Career with the Detroit Pistons winning two championships.

Notable Coaches

The following is a list of notable coaches who have led the Indiana Hoosiers men’s Basketball team in at least one season.

-Branch McCracken: coaching from 1938 to 1965, McCracken led the Hoosiers to 10 Big Ten Conference titles and two NCAA National Championships He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1968.
-Bob Knight: perhaps the most notorious coach in Indiana history, Knight led the Hoosiers to 11 Big Ten titles and three NCAA National Championships during his 29 years at the helm. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.
--Mike Davis after taking over for Bob Knight following his firing in 2000, Davis led Indiana to one Big Ten title and one NCAA National Championship game appearance during his six years as Head Coach

The two teams have played each other nearly every year since then, making it one of the oldest rivalries in college basketball The Purdue rivalry is nearly as old, dating back to 1917, and the two teams have played each other over 200 times. The Louisville rivalry is relatively new, dating back to only 2013, but has quickly become one of the most intense in college basketball

Venues

Door Basketball arenas began to spring up in the early part of the 20th century. The first permanent Professional Basketball league, the National Basketball League was founded in 1898, and the first College Games were played around the same time. The sport quickly grew in popularity, and by the 1920s there were dozens of professional and amateur teams playing in large and small cities across the country.

Today, basketball is played in virtually every corner of the globe, and there are hundreds of professional and collegiate teams. Most games are played in purpose-built arenas that can seat thousands of fans, but some are still played in smaller gyms or even outdoors.

Here is a list of some of the most famous and historic basketball venues:

--Madison Square Garden Opened in 1968, this New York City arena is home to the NBA’s Knicks and NHL’s Rangers. It has also hosted numerous other sporting events, concerts, and shows over the years.
-Boston Garden: Another iconic arena that opened its doors in 1928, Boston Garden was home to the Celtics from 1946 until 1995. It was also the site of several famous boxing matches, including Mohammed Ali vs. Joe Frazier in 1971.
--Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena: This arena opened in 1959 and was home to several NBA and NHL Teams over the years, including the Lakers, Clippers, Kings, and Sharks. It closed its doors for good in 2016.
--Olympic Stadium Built for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Olympic Stadium has been used for a variety of purposes over the years, including as a venue for basketball at both the 1972 Summer Olympics and 1974 FIBA World Championship
