The team was founded in 2009 as a member of the United States Premier Hockey League and became a member of the North American Hockey League in 2011.

The Jets were founded in 2009 by former NHL player Mike Eruzione and his wife Cathy. The team’s name was chosen through a contest open to the public, with the winning name being submitted by Janesville resident Beth Ann Brucker. The Jets began play in the 2010-11 season as members of the United States Premier Hockey League Midwest Division. In their first season of play, the Jets posted a record of 35-12-3 and won the Midwest Division championship.

In 2011, the Jets joined the North American Hockey League as part of a league-wide realignment.
