After graduating from college, Lyle had a brief stint with a professional team in Europe before returning to Toronto to play for his hometown team, the Raptors. However, his time with the Raptors was short-lived, as he was released after just two games.

Lyle was a star player at Pasadena high school leading his team to the state semifinals as a junior and the Championship game as a senior. He was named a Parade All-American and Mr. Basketball for the state of California in his senior year.

Lyle chose to attend the University of Utah, where he played four seasons for Head Coach Rick Majerus. He averaged 16.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a freshman, leading the Utes to the NCAA tournament Sweet Sixteen As a sophomore, he averaged 18.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, again leading the Utes to the Sweet Sixteen

Lyle’s junior season was his best, as he averaged 21.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range He was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press and helped lead the Utes to their first ever NCAA Final Four appearance.

Lyle’s senior season saw him average 20.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while again shooting over 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from three-point range. He was once again named first-team All-America by the AP and led Utah to its second consecutive Final Four appearance. Lyle finished his collegiate career with 2,033 points (19th all-time at Utah), 780 rebounds (10th all-time at Utah), and 140 steals (sixth all-time at Utah).

After graduation, Lyle briefly played for two NBA teams The Houston Rockets (1996–1997) and The Detroit Pistons (1997–1998). He then spent several years playing professionally in Europe before returning to Pasadena, where he currently resides with his wife and two children Jason Jr., 10 years old; Lily 8 years old .
