Jim Clancy: A Baseball Legend

Jim Clancy was one of the most successful baseball players of his generation. A three-time All-Star, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs He was a member of the World Series winning Yankees team in 1977 and won two Gold Glove Awards during his career.

Clancy was born in San Francisco in 1945. He began his Baseball Career in the minor leagues, playing for the Dodgers’ farm team in Vero Beach Florida. He made his Major League debut with the Dodgers in 1968.

Clancy had his best years with the Yankees, winning 20 games in 1979 and 15 games in 1981. He also pitched well in the postseason, helping the Yankees win the World Series in 1977 and 1978. In 1984, he was traded to the Cubs, where he finished his career.

After retiring from baseball, Clancy became a successful broadcaster and commentator. He worked for ESPN and FOX Sports and was a popular color analyst for Yankee games on the YES Network.

Clancy passed away in 2020 at the age of 75. He will be remembered as one of the great pitchers of his era and as a Yankee legend.

Clancy’s Early Life and Career

In 1971, Clancy graduated from high school and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft. Clancy spent four years in the Minor Leagues before making his Major League debut with the Cubs in 1975.

Clancy spent five seasons with the Cubs, before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1980. With the Blue Jays Clancy became one of the best pitchers in baseball. In 1982, Clancy won 19 games and helped lead the Blue Jays to their first American League Championship. In 1985, Clancy won 20 games and helped the Blue Jays win their first World Series championship.

Clancy pitched for the Blue Jays for 10 seasons before being traded to the Houston Astros in 1990. With Houston, Clancy won 14 games and helped lead the Astros to their first National League Championship. In 1992, Clancy pitched for Team USA at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.

Clancy retired from baseball in 1996 after 21 seasons in the Major Leagues During his career, Clancy won 158 games and helped lead three different teams to playoff berths.

During his time with the Blue Jays Clancy became one of the most reliable starters in the majors. He was known for his strong work ethic and durability, pitching at least 200 innings in seven of his eight seasons with the team. Clancy also had a knack for coming up big in key situations, posting a 16-5 record and a 2.93 ERA in 32 career starts against division rivals.

He pitched brilliantly in Game 4 of the Fall Classic, tossing eight innings of two-run ball to lead Toronto to a 6-2 win over the Atlanta Braves The victory evened the series at two games apiece and helped set the stage for the Blue Jays’ historic comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

Clancy’s Later Career

Clancy’s career took a downward turn in the early 1990s. He became embroiled in a number of personal and legal troubles, including an accusation of sexual assault. His performance on the field also declined, and he was released by the Tigers in 1993. He attempted a comeback with the Yankees in 1994, but was released after only one appearance. He later played briefly for aindependent League team before retiring from baseball.

He became a free agent again after the 1997 season and signed with the Chicago Cubs He retired from baseball after pitching for the Cubs in 1998.

Clancy’s wife Susan died of Breast Cancer in 2001. The couple had three children: Kevin, Sean and Shannon. Clancy now lives in Tampa, Florida with his partner Peggy Smith.
