In the history of baseball cards there are those players whose inclusion in a collection is considered a must – those rare few athletes whose talent, charisma and all-round appeal make them not just heroes on the field but legends in the hobby. Ken Griffey Jr is definitely one of those players.

The Topps Company has been celebrating Griffey’s playing career with a special 40 Years of Baseball Set – forty of The Best of the Best cards, chosen by fans, to commemorate Griffey’s election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame We caught up with Ken Griffey Jr to talk about his career, his love of the hobby and what it feels like to be considered one of the all-time greats…

Ken, firstly congratulations on your election to the national baseball Hall of Fame It’s been quite a journey for you, from being drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1987 to becoming one of the most iconic players in the game. Do you have any particular highlights or memories that stand out from your career?

It’s hard to choose just a few highlights from my career – I’ve been blessed to have had so many amazing experiences both on and off the field. If I had to narrow it down, I would say my biggest highlight would be winning the World Series with the New York Yankees in 2009. That was an unforgettable moment and something that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Your love of baseball seems to have started at a very young age – can you tell us a bit about your family’s involvement in the game and how that influenced you?

My father was my biggest influence when it came to baseball – he introduced me to the game and instilled in me a love and respect for it that has remained with me throughout my career.Growing up, I used to go watch him play semi-pro ball on weekends and he would always take me out onto the field afterwards so I could practice my swing. He was always so patient with me and would answer any questions I had about baseball – he really was my hero.

Your playing career spanned 22 years, during which time you played for three different teams. Do you have any thoughts on how the game has changed since you started out?

I think baseball is always evolving – it has to in order to stay relevant and keep people interested. When I started out, there wasn’t as much focus on analytics and everything was much more low-tech than it is now. You didn’t have guys sitting in the stands with laptops tracking every single pitch or filming games from every angle imaginable! But I think that’s what makes baseball so great – it changes with the times but at its core it remains the same great game that so many people love.

The making of a legend – the story of Ken Griffey Jr.s iconic Topps cards

Ken Griffey Jr was one of the most popular players of his generation, and his Topps cards are some of the most iconic in the history of the company. Topps celebrated the 40th anniversary of their baseball cards with a special set featuring the best cards of the past four decades, and Griffey’s 1989 Topps card was voted #1 by fans.

The story of how that card came to be is a fascinating one, and it starts with Griffey’s father, Ken Griffey Sr. Sr. was a star player for the Cincinnati Reds and he was very popular with Topps. In fact, Topps gave Sr. his own line of baseball cards which were very successful.

Topps knew that they wanted to sign Jr. to their company as well, but they had to wait until he was old enough to sign a contract. They finally got their chance in 1989, when Jr. was just 18 years old. He had just been drafted by the Seattle Mariners, and he was about to start his professional career.

Topps wanted to make Jr.’s first card special, so they decided to put him on the cover of their 40th anniversary set. They also decided to make it a chrome card, which was a new technology at the time. The result was an iconic card that is still cherished by fans today.
