The History of Lemont Baseball

Lemont baseball has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. The first organized team in Lemont was formed in 1884 and was called the Tigers. The team played its first game against a team from nearby Chicago Heights. In those early years, Lemont teams were mostly made up of factory workers from the many factories located in town.

The Tigers eventually joined a semi-professional league called the Northwestern League. The league had teams from Chicago, Milwaukee, and other cities in Illinois and Wisconsin. The league was very competitive and the Tiger teams of the 1890s were some of the best in the league.

In 1897, the Tigers moved to a new ballpark located on what is now Main Street. The ballpark quickly became known as one of the best in the area and was nicknamed “The Garden of Eden”. The Tigers played their home games there until 1903 when the team disbanded.

Lemont would not have another organized team until 1913 when a new team called the Cubs was formed. The Cubs were part of a new league called the Illinois-Wisconsin League. The league only lasted for two seasons but the Cubs were one of the best teams in the league both years.

After the Illinois-Wisconsin League folded, Lemont did not have another organized team until 1923 when a new team called the Leprechauns was formed. The Leprechauns were part of a new league called the Fox River Valley League. The Leprechauns were one of the top teams in the league and won the championship in 1924.
