Maple River’s Successful Season

Maple River’s New Head Coach

When Maple River High School in rural Minnesota needed a new head basketball coach they turned to an unlikely candidate: a former Division I player who had been out of the game for years.

Bradley Krapf had been working in the private sector since his college playing days ended in the mid-1990s. But when he saw the ad for the Maple River job, he decided to apply.

“I’d always wanted to get back into coaching,” Krapf said. “And when I saw the ad, it just seemed like a perfect fit ”

Krapf was hired last year, and he has quickly turned the Maple River program around. The Eagles went from 6-20 in his first season to 15-13 this past year. They also made their first appearance in the state tournament in 20 years.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Krapf said of his first two years at Maple River. “We’ve made a lot of progress, and we’re just getting started.”

Maple River’s Improved Defense

Maple River’s defense has been a big key to the program’s turnaround under Head Coach Scott Smith. In his first season at the helm, the Eagles allowed just 52.5 points per game nearly 10 points per game better than the previous season.

Smith preaches a aggressive, man-to-man defense that get up in opposing teams’ faces and doesn’t give them room to operate. It’s a style of play that can be difficult to execute, but the Eagles have bought in and it’s paid off with results on the court.

With another year of experience under their belts, Maple River should be even better on defense in 2020-21. If the Eagles can continue to improve on that end of the floor, they could be in store for another successful season

Maple River’s Exciting Off-Season

Maple River’s boys Basketball Program is coming off an exciting off-season. The Eagles won the state championship in Class C, defeating archrival Belle Plaine in the title game. The team then went on to win the Midwest regional tournament defeating Minnesota powerhouses Hopkins and Minnehaha Academy. The Eagles finished the season with a 27-3 record, and were ranked No. 1 in the state in Class C.

This off-season, Maple River has been busy preparing for the upcoming season The team has been working hard in the weight room and on the court, and is looking to build on last year’s success. The Eagles have also been busy recruiting, and have landed a top-10 player in the state of Minnesota in Class C.
