Matt Gwynne, CEO of Espresso Capital, is a former professional basketball player who has transitioned his skills from the court to the boardroom.
Gwynne was born in Toronto, Canada and played Division 1 basketball at Clemson University in the United States After going undrafted in the NBA, he played several years professionally in Europe before retiring from the game in 2009. It was during his time playing overseas that Gwynne began to develop an interest in business.
In 2012, Gwynne co-founded Espresso Capital, a venture capital firm that provides growth capital to early stage technology companies. Espresso Capital has invested in over 100 companies including Wattpad, Hootsuite, and Shopify.
Gwynne continues to be an active investor and advisor in the Canadian startup ecosystem. He is a mentor at startup accelerator programs including Founder Fuel and Techstars Toronto.

Gwynne began his career as a professional basketball player He played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and for several teams in Europe He also worked as a coach and scout for the Sixers.
In 2001, Gwynne retired from basketball to focus on his business career. He co-founded Hoop Group with two partners, Jeffery Goldman and David Aferiat. The company provides training and development programs for Ung Basketball players, coaches, and officials. Hoop Group also owns and operates several Basketball Tournaments and leagues, including the Hoop Group Summer Camps, the Hoop Group Elite Camps, and the Hoop Group Jam Fest tournaments.
Gwynne is also a founding partner of Gotham Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage technology companies. He is a member of the board of directors of several companies, including Seamless (a food delivery service), Junto (a social network for entrepreneurs), and Social accountability International (a nonprofit organization that promotes corporate responsibility).
In addition to his business pursuits, Gwynne is active in philanthropy. He is a founding member of The Nash Collection, a charity that provides financial support to families of children with cancer. Q: You had a very successful career as a professional basketball player What made you decide to leave that behind and pursue a business career?
A: I actually didn’t make the decision to leave basketball behind right away. After I retired from playing, I took some time off to relax and travel. But after awhile, I started to get antsy and realized that I missed the competitive environment of the business world. So I decided to go back to school and get my MBA.
Q: What do you think are the biggest differences between the two worlds?
A: I think the biggest difference is that in business, there are always new challenges to conquer. In basketball, once you win a championship, there’s not much left to achieve. But in business, there’s always something new to strive for. I also think that business requires more strategic thinking than basketball does. In basketball, you often have to react quickly and instinctually – but in business, it’s important to be able to Step Back and think about the big picture.
Q: What would you say is the most important quality for someone who wants to make a successful transition from athletics to business?
A: I think the most important quality is determination. It’s not going to be easy – you’ll have to put in long hours and make sacrifices. But if you’re determined to succeed, you’ll find a way to make it happen.
