Mercer Baseball Schedule: Your Guide to the Season

It’s time to start planning your trips to watch the Mercer Bears play baseball! Here’s a guide to their schedule so you can make the most of the season.

Introduction

Welcome to the 2019 Mercer Baseball schedule! We’ll be your guide to all the action this season, so you won’t miss a single pitch.

The Bears open the season on February 15th at home against the University of South Carolina State Spartans First pitch is set for 4:00 PM EST.

Mercer will then hit the road for a three-game series at Kennesaw State before returning home for a six-game homestand. The homestand will feature games against Kennesaw State Furman, and Georgia Tech

Following the homestand, the Bears will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Samford in a three-game series. The final road trip of the season will see Mercer head to Greenville, North Carolina to take on East Carolina

The regular season will come to a close at home with a three-game series against Florida Atlantic First pitch for the final game of the season is set for 1:00 PM EST on Saturday, May 25th.

The Teams

The Mercer Bears Baseball Team will compete in the Southern Conference this upcoming season The conference is made up of 10 teams split into two divisions, the Southern and the Coastal. Here is a list of the teams in each division:

The Players

The Mercer baseball team is composed of 28 players, split evenly between freshmen and upperclassmen. The team is then split into two squads of 14 players each and compete against each other in fall and spring practices. The 28 players come from all over the nation, with three states being represented (Georgia, Florida, Alabama). Pitchers and catchers report first to campus on February 1st for pre-season training, with the rest of the team joining them on February 5th.

The Coaches

Head Coach Kevin Kierst
Kevin Kierst enters his 25th season as the Bears head baseball coach in 2019. He has led Mercer to 21 winning seasons, including a program-record 41-win season in 2014, en route to 15 appearances in the Atlantic Sun conference tournament and three trips to the NCAA regional Kierst has been named the A-Sun Coach of the Year four times and has produced 100+ win seasons eight times during his tenure.
assistant coaches Matt Durham and Will Harford
Matt Durham joins the staff for his first season as an Assistant Coach after serving as a volunteer assistant at Emory & Henry during the 2018 season. Will Harford is in his first year as an assistant coach and will serve as the team’s pitching coach. Prior to Mercer, Harford served on staff at Auburn Montgomery.

The Fans

The Fans are the backbone of Mercer baseball. They come out to every game to support their team and create an atmosphere that is unmatched in college baseball They are passionate, knowledgeable, and most importantly, they love their team.

No matter what the score is, you can always find a Mercer fan cheering on their team. They are the first to jump up and down when their team makes a great play, and they are always there to support them through the tough times.

The Experience

As the game gets underway, you’ll be treated to the sounds of crackling bats and cheering fans. The smell of hot dogs and popcorn will fill the air, and your taste buds will be tantalized by our world-famous concessions.

The History

The Mercer University baseball schedule is released every year in early February. The season generally starts in late February and finishes up in early May. conference play takes place in April and the conference tournament is held in late April/early May.

The Rivalries

Mercer baseball has a long tradition of success on the diamond, highlighted by winning seasons in 22 of the last 26 years. And while the team has enjoyed plenty of success, nothing gets the fans going like a good rivalry game. Here are three of the biggest rivalries on the schedule this season.

Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets are Mercer’s biggest rival and the two teams have been playing each other since 1895. The series is currently tied at 107-107-1, but Georgia Tech has won eight of the last 10 meetings. This year’s game will be played at Georgia Tech on April 16.

Clemson
The Tigers and Bears have been playing each other since 1902 and Clemson currently holds a 126-103-2 advantage in the all-time series. Mercer has won four of the last five meetings, including a 3-2 victory last season in 10 innings. This year’s game will be played at Mercer on May 14.

Georgia State
The Panthers are relative newcomers to Mercer’s schedule, but the two teams have developed a rivalry over the last few years. Georgia State holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series, but Mercer has won three straight games, including a 9-3 victory last season. This year’s game will be played at Georgia State on April 30.

The Future

The first month of the season is always an exciting time for baseball fans This is when we start to see which teams are going to be contenders and which ones are going to be pretenders.
