Michigan Basketball: What’s Causing the Wolverines’ Inconsistency?
Phil Martelli, head coach of the Michigan Wolverines recently spoke to reporters about his team’s nt play this season. “I think it’s just a matter of us not putting together a complete game,”Martelli said. “We’ll have a great first half and then come out flat in the second half, or we’ll start slow and then play well in the second half.”
When asked what he believes is causing this inconsistency, Martelli had this to say: “I think it’s just a matter of focus. We have to be able to maintain our intensity for an entire game, and that’s something we’ve been working on.”
The Wolverines have shown glimpses of greatness this season, but their inability to put together complete games has been their downfall. If they can figure out how to maintain their focus for 40 minutes, they could still turn their season around.

Martelli said that the team’s recent three-game losing streak was “very frustrating.”
“We didn’t play well in any of those games,” he said. “It’s hard to win when you don’t play well.”
Martelli said that the Wolverines need to be more consistent on both ends of the court.
“We have to put together a complete game,” he said. “We can’t just rely on our offense or our defense. We have to do both.”
Michigan Basketball: A Closer Look at Michigan’s Struggles
Michigan Basketball has not been living up to the hype this season. inconsistency has been a problem all year long, with the Wolverines alternating between great stretches of play and puzzling lapses. This trend continued in their most recent game against Illinois, where they managed to come back from a 15 point deficit to win by 3.
After the game, Head coach Phil Martelli talked about his team’s struggles. “It’s been a tough season,” he said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but I’m proud of how our guys have stayed together through it all.”
Martelli went on to say that he believes his team is capable of turning things around and that they will continue to work hard to get back on track.

“It’s been a streaky season,” Coach Martelli said. “We’ve had some good wins, but we’ve also had some tough losses. I think the biggest thing for this team is to keep working hard and stay positive.”

Michigan Basketball: What Needs to Change for Michigan?
In his first year at the helm of the Michigan Basketball Program head coach Juwan Howard has faced his fair share of challenges. After starting the season 11-1, the Wolverines have gone just 6-6 since, losing four of their last five games.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Athletic Basketball Show, former St. Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli offered his thoughts on what needs to change for Michigan moving forward.
“I think they need to get back to playing with that joy, that swagger, that they had early in the season,” Martelli said. “They need to get back to playing with that joy, that swagger, that they had early in the season. I think they lost a little bit of that.”
Martelli pointed to Michigan’s recent losses to Penn State and Indiana as two games in which the Wolverines looked like a different team than the one that started the season so strong.
“Those were two losses that were really downhill slides for Michigan, where it just looked like they lost their way a little bit,” Martelli said. “I think they need to find themselves again and get back to playing with that joy and energy and enthusiasm that they had early in the season.”
Michigan Basketball: Can the Wolverines salvage their season?
It’s been a roller coaster of a season for John Beilein and the Michigan Wolverines The team started off strong, with impressive wins over then-ranked No. 7 Iowa State and No. 9 North Carolina But things took a turn for the worse in mid-January, as the Wolverines lost five of their next six games.
Now, at 13-8 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play, Michigan finds itself on the outside looking in when it comes to the NCAA Tournament picture. But with eleven games remaining on the schedule, all is not lost for the Wolverines. They’ll need to string together a few wins in order to get back on track, but it is certainly possible for this team to salvage its season.
One person who believes in Michigan is Phil Martelli, head coach of Saint Joseph’s University and a former assistant under Beilein at West Virginia University. Martelli spoke highly of Beilein and the Wolverines during an appearance on “The Sam Webb Show” on Sports Talk 1050 WTKA earlier this week.
“I think John [Beilein] is one of the best coaches in our game,” Martelli said. “… I haven’t seen a team that works harder than Michigan works on both ends of the floor… We all go through these ebbs and flows during a season and I think Michigan will be just fine. I would not want to play them in March.”
Martelli also had high praise for redshirt sophomore center Moritz Wagner, who has been one of Michigan’s best players this season. Wagner is averaging 12.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from three-point range
“I love Moritz Wagner, I think he plays Ning Basketball ” Martelli said. “He brings an enthusiasm, an energy, a swagger to that team that I think is invaluable… He understands how to play Ning basketball and I think that separates him from a lot of guys his age.”
Michigan Basketball: A look at Michigan’s remaining schedule
With only a handful of games remaining in the regular season the Michigan Wolverines find themselves in a bit of a hole. Sitting at sixth in the conference with an 8-6 record, they are currently two games back of fifth-place Maryland and three games back of fourth-place Wisconsin.
To make matters worse, their remaining schedule is no cakewalk. They’ll take on Maryland and Wisconsin on the road before finishing up at home against Indiana and Purdue.
Despite the challenges ahead, head coach Phil Martelli remains optimistic about his team’s chances. “I like where we are,” he said after practice on Tuesday. “I like our chances.”
We’ll see if the Wolverines can turn things around and make a run at the conference tournament But even if they don’t, there’s still hope for a berth in the NCAA tournament After all, they did make it last year with a similar record.
Michigan Basketball: What are the Wolverines’ chances of making the NCAA Tournament?
Phil Martelli, longtime Head Coach of the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, knows a thing or two about college basketball
