In 1923, Middle Tennessee State University fielded its first basketball team The team had little success in its early years, but by the mid-1930s had become a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference The team won conference championships in 1936 and 1937, and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 1938 and 1939. After a few down years during World War II, the team rebounded in the late 1940s and early 1950s, winning another conference championship in 1951 and making four more NCAA tournament appearances between 1952 and 1955. The team’s success continued into the 1960s, as it won four more conference championships and made nine more NCAA tournament appearances between 1961 and 1969. In 1970, the team made its first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), and went on to win the NIT championship that year. The team has appeared in 20 NCAA tournaments and 13 NITs since then, including a run of five straight NCAA tournament appearances from 1987 to 1991.
