The team mascot is Webster, a giant yellow duck. The current franchise dates back to 1989 when it was known as the Canton–Akron Indians and played in the short-season Class A New York–Penn League. In 1997 they moved up to the Eastern League and became known as the Akron Aeros.

In 2013, they changed their name to the RubberDucks, after Akron’s history of rubber manufacturing, including famous companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
