Holloway, who is from Durham, North Carolina was playing in his home state for the first time since his freshman year of college. He said it was “a dream come true” to be able to play in front of his family and friends.

The victory improves Virginia Tech’s record to 8-3 on the season. The team will next take on cross-state rival Virginia on Saturday, December 22.

The game began with both teams feeling each other out, as neither was able to take an early lead. That all changed when Murphy hit a jumper to put the Hokies up, 10-8. Virginia Tech would go on to win by a final score of 79-56.

In his third season, the Hokies went 20-15 and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007. They lost in the first round to Butler. The Hokies made the NCAA tournament again in 2019, Williams’ sixth season, and defeated Saint Louis in the first round before losing to Duke in the second round.

But then, star player Murphy went down with an injury. The team was devastated, and didn’t know if they could continue on without him.

And when Murphy returned from his injury, he led the team all the way to the conference championship game. It was an unforgettable season for everyone involved, and it’s one that will be remembered for years to come.
