Nathan Scott was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 28, 1978. He was the only child of Joyce and Herb Scott. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and Nathan went to live with his grandparents, Hattie and John Wilkinson. Nathan’s mother remarried when he was six, and he took the last name of his stepfather, Derek Jackson.

Nathan began playing basketball at the age of eight. By the time he was a freshman in high school he was already 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall. He played on his high school’s varsity basketball team for four years. In his senior year, he averaged 25 points per game and was named to the All-State team.
