In 1984, Topps Chewing Gum Inc.launched what is now considered the father of all baseball cards—the Topps Traded set. This set contained 792 cards of players who had been traded to new teams during the 1983 MLB season The now-famous “Raines rookie card” was included in this set as well as other rookies like Tim Wallach Jesse Orosco, and Bryant Gumbel collectors scrambled to find these cards and Topps chewing gum Inc. took notice.

The next year, Topps expanded the Traded set from 792 to 1,152 cards and created National baseball card Day to celebrate it. National baseball card Day was first held on Saturday August 11th, 1984 at participating Hobby Shops across America. On National baseball card Day, card shops gave away free packs of Topps baseball cards with the purchase of a pack of Topps gum.

Another extremely valuable Baseball card is the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card. This card is one of the most iconic cards in history and is highly sought-after by collectors. In 2018, a pristine copy of this card sold for $2.88 million, making it the most expensive post-war baseball card ever sold!

Additional valuable baseball cards include the 1916 M101-5 Felix Mendelssohn #51 (one of only four copies known to exist, sold for $862,500 in 2019), 1936 Goudey Joe DiMaggio #149 ($751,000 in 2019), and 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth #1 ($717,000 in 2020).
