Juancho’s humble beginnings

Juancho Hernangomez was born into a family of professional basketball players in Spain. His father, Juancho, Sr., played basketball in the Spanish ACB League his mother, Margarita, played on the Spanish Women’s national team and his older brother, Willy, plays for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. Growing up, Juancho dreamed of playing in the NBA like his brother. He worked hard to improve his game and eventually earned a spot on the Spanish Under-16 National Team From there, he continued to develop his skills and play against top competition. In 2016, he declared for the NBA draft and was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 15th overall pick. Juancho has since become a key member of the Nuggets rotation and has helped them become one of the top teams in the Western Conference

From humble beginnings in the DR to the bright lights of the NBA, Juancho Hernangomez’s journey to the top has been an incredible one.

Born in Puerto Plata, Juancho had humble beginnings. He started playing basketball at a local park with his friends and quickly developed a love for the game. His parents always encouraged him to follow his dreams and with their support, Juancho pursued his passion for basketball.

He was eventually discovered by a scout from the University of Detroit Mercy and offered a scholarship to play for their basketball team Juancho accepted and moved to the United States where he honed his skills under the guidance of Head Coach Ray McCallum Sr.

After two successful years at Detroit Mercy Juancho declared for the NBA Draft and was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 15th overall pick. He made his debut for the Nuggets in 2016 and has since become a key member of their rotation, averaging 9.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in his first two seasons in the league.

As he enters his third season in the NBA, Juancho looks back on his journey with gratitude. From Puerto Plata to Detroit to Denver, he’s come a long way – and he’s just getting started.

Since then, Juancho has gone on to have a successful NBA career. He’s become one of the best players on the Nuggets, and he even helped them reach the Western Conference Finals in 2020.

Crispino “Juancho” Hernangomez was born in Madrid, Spain, to personal trainer Pablo Hernangomez and Maria de la Asuncion “Charo” Lopez. Juancho has an older brother, Willy, who also plays Professional Basketball Growing up, Juancho idolized Pau Gasol and dreamed of one day playing in the NBA like his favorite player.

Pablo instilled a strong work ethic in his sons from a young age, often taking them to the gym to train with him. Juancho and Willy both began playing organized basketball at age seven. Juancho quickly developed into a talented player, and by age 16 he was playing for Real Madrid’s youth team.

Juancho Hernangomez has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Nuggets this season. When Juancho was drafted by the Nuggets in 2016, he was seen as aproject with a high ceiling but a very low floor. Juancho was raw offensively, didn’t have much of an outside shot, and wasn’t particularly athletic. Moreover, he was coming off of a season in Spain where he only played limited minutes due to injury.

Despite all of these concerns, Juancho has improved in every single year he’s been in the league. He’s developed into a very good shooter, averaging over 37% from three-point range this season. He’s also become much more athletic and explosive, which has helped him become a very good finisher around the basket. Defensively, Juancho has always been very good due to his high IQ and his ability to use his length to bother shooters.

All of this has led to Juancho becoming one of the most productive players on the Nuggets roster. He’s averaging nearly 12 points and 6 rebounds per game while playing excellent defense. He’s also been extremely efficient, with an True shooting percentage of over 60%. In other words, Juancho has been one of the best players on the Nuggets this season and is integral to their success.
