As a young child Barkley faced many obstacles; he was very short and had a severe stutter that made him the butt of many jokes. Despite these difficulties he excelled in sports and was determined to make something of himself.
In High School Barkley played basketball and football; he was recruited by several colleges to play both sports but decided to focus on basketball. He attended Auburn University where he played Power Forward for three years. He then entered the NBA Draft and in 1984 was selected fifth overall by the Philadelphia Sixers.
Barkley played for the Sixers for eight seasons before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1992. In his first season with the Suns he was named league MVP and led them to the NBA Finals where they lost to the Chicago Bulls He continued to play at a high level for the Suns until 1996 when he was traded to the Houston Rockets In Houston Barkley teamed up with fellow All-Stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler together they helped lead the Rockets to an appearance in the NBA Finals where they lost to the Bulls again.
Barkley retired from basketball in 2000 after playing one season with the Rockets.
