How the NBA started

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the world’s premier men’s Professional Basketball league. It is composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada), and is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. The NBA was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1][2] The league adopted the name National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with its rival league, the National Basketball League (NBL).

The first NBA game

On November 1, 1946, the Basketball Association of America was formed in Chicago. The first BAA game was played a month later, on December 3rd between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Huskies at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. In 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association which remains to this day.

The first NBA champions

The first NBA champions were the Philadelphia Warriors who defeated the Chicago Stags in the 1947 NBA Finals The Warriors were led by star player George Mikan who was named the NBA Finals MVP. The team’s coach, Eddie Gottlieb, was also named Coach of the Year.

The first NBA All-Star Game

The first NBA All-Star game was played on January 15, 1951, at the Boston Garden. The game featured George Mikan who was the MVP of the game, as well as players such as Bob Cousy, Dolph Schayes, and Alex Groza. The game was a matchup between the Eastern Conference All-Stars and the Western Conference All-Stars.

The first NBA draft

On June 6, 1947, the Basketball Association of America held the first ever NBA draft Ten rounds were held, with Round 1 consisting of territorial choices. The Boston Celtics made Chuck Cooper the first African American player to be drafted into the NBA.

The first NBA Finals

The Boston Celtics and Minneapolis Lakers competed in the first NBA Finals in 1947. The Lakers won the series four games to two. George Mikan was the Lakers star player, averaging 22 points and 12 rebounds per game

The first NBA MVP

The first NBA MVP was awarded to Bob Pettit of the St. Louis Hawks in 1956.

The first NBA Rookie of the Year

The first ever winner of the NBA Rookie of the Year was Chuck Cooper, who finished his first season with the Boston Celtics in 1950.

The first NBA All-Star Game MVP

The first NBA All-Star Game MVP was Oscar Robertson The game was played on January 15, 1951, and Robertson had a game-high 23 points.

The first NBA champion

The first NBA Champion was the Minneapolis Lakers, who defeated the Syracuse Nationals in the 1950 NBA Finals
