After twenty years at the helm of the NC State baseball program Coach Mike Fox has announced his retirement.
Coach Fox has been a fixture in the college baseball world for over two decades, and his impact on the game will be felt for years to come. While his retirement is certainly a loss for NC State, we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Mike Fox’s coaching career
Mike Fox the winningest coach in North Carolina State history, is retiring after 20 seasons leading the Wolfpack.
Fox guided the Wolfpack to a school-record 52 wins and the program’s first No. 1 national ranking in 2019. The team made the NCAA tournament for the 16th time under Fox, but was eliminated in the Super Regionals
“It has been the honor of my life to coach Wolfpack baseball ” Fox said in a statement. “I will forever be grateful to have had the opportunity to lead this program and work with so many incredible young men over the years.”
NC State went 1,417-718-3 under Fox and reached the College World Series three times, most recently in 2013. The Wolfpack also won nine Atlantic Coast conference tournament titles during his tenure.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the head baseball coach at NC State for the past 17 years,” Fox said in a statement. “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many great coaches, players and staff members over the years. I am also thankful to the administration, fans and alumni for their support of our program.”
Fox led the Wolfpack to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including five trips to the College World Series He finishes his career with a 1,004-624 record (.617 winning percentage).

NC State won 40 or more games in 12 of Fox’s 17 seasons, and he was named acc coach of the Year four times (2002, 2005, 2009, 2012).

Fox’s retirement announcement on Thursday came as a surprise to many, but those close to him say it was a decision he had been mulling for some time.
“I think he’s at peace with it,” said longtime Assistant Coach Robert Woodard. “He’s done a lot of great things here and I think he’s ready to move on to the next chapter in his life.”
Players past and present took to social media to express their gratitude for Fox and all he has done for the program. Current shortstop Danny Serretti called him “the best coach I’ve ever played for,” while former pitcher Carlos Rodon praised Fox for helping him develop into a first-round MLB Draft pick.
There is no word yet on who will replace Fox as Head coach but whoever it is will have big shoes to fill.
