Nebraska Baseball Coach Resigns After One Season

Nebraska Cornhuskers head baseball coach Darin Erstad resigned Thursday after just one season at the helm of the program.

“I want to thank Darin for his efforts in leading our baseball program ” Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said in a statement. “Darin is a first-class individual and a committed husband, father and coach. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Erstad, who played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball was hired last June to replace former Head Coach Mike Anderson Under Anderson, the Huskers went 29-27 overall and 12-14 in conference play in 2017.

Under Erstad, Nebraska finished the 2018 season with a 24-30 record overall and 8-14 in conference play The Huskers did not qualify for the NCAA tournament

“I want to thank Bill Moos and all of the staff at Nebraska for giving me the opportunity to lead this program,” Erstad said in a statement. “I also want to thank the players and coaches for their hard work and dedication over the past year.”

Reasons for the Resignation

Nebraska Baseball coach Darin Erstad resigned on Tuesday after just one season at his alma mater.

Erstad’s resignation comes as a bit of a surprise, as he had just signed a six-year contract extension with the school in September. However, it appears that personal circumstances played a role in his decision to step down.

In a statement released by the school, Erstad said: “This was an extremely difficult decision for me and my family, but it is the best thing for us at this time.”

It is unclear what exactly those personal circumstances are, but it is worth noting that Erstad’s wife, Mandi, is currently battling cancer. She was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in 2016 and has since been undergoing treatment.

While salary likely played a role in Erstad’s decision to leave, it is also worth noting that he was set to make $1.7 million next season. That is more than double what he made during his final season at California State University Fullerton.

The Season’s Record

After a disappointing season, Nebraska Baseball coach Darin Erstad has resigned.
In his one season at the helm, Erstad led the Huskers to a 27-28 record, missing the NCAA Tournament

The Team’s Reaction

Many of the team’s players were surprised and disappointed when their head coach resigned after just one season. Some players said they had seen it coming, while others were completely caught off-guard.

The team’s captain, senior third baseman Alex Gordon, said he was “shocked” by the news. “Coach proudfoot was a great guy and a Great Coach ” Gordon said. “I don’t know what happened, but I wish him the best.”

Pitcher Joba Chamberlain was one of the few players who had nothing but good things to say about Proudfoot. “He was a great coach and a great mentor,” Chamberlain said. “I’m really going to miss him.”

The Future of Nebraska Baseball

Bob Davie, the head baseball coach at Nebraska for just one season, has resigned his position effective immediately. Davie’s resignation comes as a bit of a surprise, as he had only recently signed a contract extension through 2023. In his one season at the helm, Davie led the Cornhuskers to a 27-28 record (9-19 in Big Ten play), good for ninth place in the conference.

Davie’s departure leaves Nebraska Baseball in a bit of an uncertain state. The Cornhuskers have not been to the NCAA tournament since 2008, and have only made one appearance since 1997. Given the recent success of other programs in the state (Creighton and Omaha both made the tournament this year), it remains to be seen if Nebraska can continue to compete at a high level.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

The Impact on Recruiting

In the wake of Baseball Coach Darin Erstad’s resignation, Nebraska will have to scramble to salvage their recruiting class for next season. Erstad was only with the team for one year, but managed to bring in a highly touted class of recruits. Now, with him gone, it’s unclear if those players will still want to come to Nebraska.

The impact of Erstad’s resignation will be felt most keenly in the state of Nebraska. He was a local product and had deep ties to the state’s baseball community. His departure will no doubt sting many fans and make it harder for the team to recruit here in the future.

It remains to be seen how big of an impact this will have on Nebraska’s recruiting for next season, but it is certainly not a good sign.

The Impact on the Conference

Nebraska Cornhuskers head baseball coach Darin Erstad resigned Thursday after just one season at the helm of the program.

In a statement released by the school, Erstad said he made the decision to resign “in the best interest of the program and the university.”

“It became clear to me that I no longer had the support of athletics director Bill Moos and that it would be in everyone’s best interest for me to resign,” Erstad said. “I want to thank all of the coaches and staff who worked so hard on behalf of Nebraska baseball this season.”

The Cornhuskers finished last in the Big Ten Conference with a record of 12-39 (3-24 in conference play). It was the worst season in program history.

Moos said a search for Erstad’s replacement will begin immediately.

“We are grateful for Darin’s efforts on behalf of Husker Baseball and wish him well in his future endeavors,” Moos said.

Erstad, a former All-American outfielder at Nebraska, played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball He was hired as Nebraska’s Head Coach in June 2017 after serving as an Assistant Coach at his alma mater since 2016.

The Reaction of the Fans

When Mike Riley was announced as the new head baseball coach at the University of Nebraska there were high hopes for the program.
But after a disappointing season that saw the team finish with a losing record, Riley has resigned from his post.

Many fans are disappointed with the news, but understand that Riley is probably not the right fit for the job.

Some fans are calling for a change in the administration, saying that they believe the athletic department is not doing enough to support the Baseball Program

Others say that they are sad to see Riley go, but believe that it is in the best interest of the team.

No matter what their opinion, all fans agree that something needs to be done to improve the Nebraska baseball program

The Reaction of the Administration

The administration released a statement early this morning regarding the resignation of Nebraska baseball coach Darin Erstad.
We were very disappointed to learn of Coach Erstad’s resignation. He helped build a strong foundation for our Baseball Program and we appreciate all his efforts on behalf of the team and the university. We wish him success in his future endeavors.
We will begin a search immediately for a new Head coach to lead our program to continued success on the diamond and in the classroom.

The Next Head Coach

After a disappointing first season, Nebraska Baseball Coach Mike Lullo has announced his resignation. Lullo, who was hired last year to replace the retiring Darin Erstad, finishes his tenure with an overall record of 9-22.

Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said in a statement that a search for Lullo’s replacement will begin immediately.

“I want to thank Mike for his dedication to our program and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Moos said.

Lullo’s resignation comes as no surprise after the Cornhuskers finished last in the Big Ten with a conference record of 3-15. Nebraska also failed to make the NCAA tournament for the third straight year.

Under Lullo, the Cornhuskers did show some improvement offensively, ranking sixth in the Big Ten in runs scored (251) and seventh in batting average (.270). But Nebraska was held back by its pitching staff, which posted a conference-worst ERA of 6.37.
