Neuqua Valley Basketball – The Team

The Neuqua Valley basketball team is a fun and competitive group that loves to play the game The team is made up of players from all different backgrounds and life experiences, which makes for a unique and interesting group. The team has a strong desire to win, but they also take the time to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team.

The Coach

Neuqua Valley High School’s boys’ Basketball team is led by Coach Joe Romano. Romano has been at the helm of the program for five seasons, compiling a record of 86-49. In his time at NV, Coach Romano has led the team to one conference championship and two regional titles. He was named Coach of the Year in 2016 by both the Chicago Tribune and Illinois basketball Coaches Association. Under his leadership, the team has become known for its strong defense and disciplined play.

The Classic Rival: rival school from down the street that you’ve been playing basketball against since you were kids. The game is always intense but good-natured, and bragging rights are on the line. This is usually not a serious rivalry, but it’s still fun to beat your Classic Rival.

The Regional Rival: another school in your area or region that you play against regularly. These games tend to be more serious, as both teams are usually vying for supremacy in the region. These rivalries can get pretty intense!

The Commercial Rival: a school that you don’t play against regularly, but that is considered to be your main rival. This is usually due to some kind of history between the two schools, or because one team is consistently better than the other. Commercial Rivals can be friendly or fierce depending on the situation.

The History

Since the school’s founding in 1997, Neuqua Valley High School’s boys Basketball team has been a force to reckon with in the Illinois High School Basketball World In just their second year of competition, the team made it all the way to the Elite Eight in the State Tournament They’ve made it back to that round four more times in the years since, most recently in 2019.

The team is consistently ranked among the best in the state and has produced several Division I basketball players including former University of Illinois star Tyler Griffey.

The Championships

The Neuqua Valley varsity Basketball Team has qualified for the Illinois high school Association State Finals four times in school history. They are looking to add a fifth championship this year.

Neuqua Valley’s first appearance in the state finals came in 2010, when they lost to Simeon Academy in the Class 4A state championship game. The Wildcats bounced back the following year and won the Class 4A state title, defeating Whitney Young Magnet School in the final.

In 2013, Neuqua Valley made it back to the state finals, but they were beaten by Benet Academy in the Class 4A Championship game The Wildcats made it back to the state finals again in 2014, but once again they were beaten, this time by Curie Metropolitan high school in the Class 3A state championship game.

This year, Neuqua Valley is looking to add a fifth championship to their history. The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 1 in the state of Illinois and are undefeated so far this season. They will be one of the favorites to win the Class 4A state title this year.

The Future

The 2017-18 Neuqua Valley Varsity Basketball team is looking very promising this season. They have been working extremely hard in the off-season and are hoping to build off of their successful 2016-17 season The team is led by Senior captain Cole Johnson and includes a core group of talented underclassmen who have a lot of potential. Neuqua Valley is looking to make a deep run in the playoffs this year and the future looks bright for the program.
