Basketball is a sport that is played with two teams of five players each. The objective of the game is to score points by shooting the ball through a hoop (the basket) that is mounted on a backboard at each end of the court. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

New Albany basketball is played on a regulation-sized court that measures 94 feet long and 50 feet wide The game is divided into four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes. There are also two halves, each lasting 20 minutes.

There are five players on each team: the center, Power Forward small forward shooting guard and point guard Each player has a specific role to play in order to help their team win.

The center is responsible for protecting the basket and rebounding missed shots. They usually stand in the middle of the paint (the area closest to the basket).

The power forward primarily focuses on rebounding and scoring near the basket. They usually stand just outside of the paint.

The small forward primarily focuses on scoring but may also be asked to rebound or play defense They usually stand outside of the paint but closer to the basket than the power forward

The shooting guard is responsible for scoring points from all areas of the court, but they will typically spend most of their time behind the three-point line (the arc that extends around 23 feet from each sideline and 6 feet from each baseline).
The point guard runs the offense and sets up teammates for scoring opportunities. They typically spend most of their time near midcourt but may also go inside the paint to grab rebounds or score points

The History of New Albany Basketball

Basketball in New Albany can be traced back to the early days of the sport. The first organized team in New Albany was the Porters, who were organized in 1902. The Porters were a local team made up of players from all over the city. They played their games at the Starlight Athletic Club, which was located on Spring Street.

The Porters were successful in their early years, winning several championships. In fact, they were so successful that they attracted the attention of National Basketball powers such as the Kansas City Athletic Club and the Chicago Bulls The Porters even managed to beat the Bulls in a game played in Chicago.

However, the Porters’ success was short-lived. In 1910, the team lost its best player, Harry “Buck” Freeman, to a Knee Injury Without Freeman, the team struggled and eventually disbanded in 1912.

It would be nearly two decades before basketball would return to New Albany on a organized basis. In 1930, a group of local businessmen formed a team called the New Albany Merchants. The Merchants played their games at YMCA gymnasium on Market Street.

The Merchants were reasonably successful, winning several championships in their early years. However, like the Porters before them, they struggled after losing their best player (in this case, center George Mikan) to injury. The team disbanded in 1938.

It would be another 20 years before basketball would return to New Albany on a regular basis. In 1958, a group of local businessmen formed a semiprofessional team called the New Albany Colonials. The Colonials played their games at Memorial Coliseum on Court Avenue.

The Colonials were reasonably successful during their four years of existence, winning several championships and attracting some Top Players from around the country (including future NBA Star Connie “Ducky” Drake). However, financial problems caused the team to folded in 1962.
