New Orleans Jazz Basketball Schedule

The New Orleans Jazz are a professional Basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Jazz compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division The team plays its home games at the Smoothie King Center
The Jazz were established in 1974 as an expansion team in New Orleans. The NBA first expanded to New Orleans in 1967 with the addition of the then–New Orleans Buccaneers. However, music entrepreneur Dave Dixon became interested in bringing an NBA team to New Orleans, Louisiana around 1971 and approached then-NBA Commissioner J. Walter Kennedy about it on several occasions. Dixon was rebuffed by Kennedy, and though both he and some local media continued to lobby for an expansion team throughout 1971–1972, no action was taken by the NBA to expand further than 15 teams until 1974, just two years later.
In October 1973, Louisiana voters passed a bond supporting construction of a new arena for the then–New Orleans Nets and Southern University Saints men’s basketball teams this vote led to substantial support for an NBA expansion bid by Dixon and numerous business leaders in New Orleans who also committed their own resources behind it. On August 6, 1974, after receiving assurances from former Baltimore Bullets General Manager Teddy McCormick that he would purchase 14 percent of an expansion franchise if awarded to New Orleans, the NBA awarded one of its four 1976 expansion franchises to a group led by Dixon; as compensation for making McCormick a part-owner rather than giving him an outright Expansion draft pick for his Bullets (which would have been somewhat unfair since that would have given him two draft picks), Dixon agreed not to vote on which city received the final franchise until all cities had been considered.[1][2]
The formal announcement of the new franchise was made by Commissioner Nixon at O’Hara’s Landing Restaurant on Airline Highway on January 18, 1975.[3][4] Privately held San Francisco based businessman Sam Battistone Sr., owner of San Diego/Houston Rockets franchise (which he later sold), won majority control of the team in1977.[5] The team also hired former Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Tom Nissalke as its first head coach [6] He led Kentucky Colonels to American Basketball Association Championship game in 1968 but failed against Indiana Pacer for title.[7]
