Introduction

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s Hockey Team is a NCAA Division I college Ice Hockey team that competes in the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes are members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association They play their home games at the OSU Ice Rink, located on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes have won two NCAA National Championships and five conference championships

As of the start of the 2020-21 season, there are 26 players on the roster. This includes 12 forwards, 11 defensemen, and 3 goaltenders. The team is coached by John Markell and captained by Matthew Weis.

The Roster

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s Ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that competes in the Big Ten Conference The Buckeyes are members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The team is based at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and play their home games at the OSU Ice Rink, which opened in 1961.

As of the 2017–18 season, the Buckeyes have an all-time record of 1,226–1,222–152 (.502 winning percentage) and have made 25 NCAA tournament appearances. The Buckeyes won their lone NCAA National Championship in 1998.

The Forwards

The Ohio State Hockey team is made up of forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders- all of whom play vital roles in the team’s success. However, the forwards, who are responsible for the majority of the scoring, often get the most attention. So, who are these student-athletes that make up the forward lines for the Buckeyes?

#1- Freshman C.J. Messner
C.J. is a 6’1″, 192-pound native of Powell, Ohio. He’s considered a Power Forward and is known for his intimidation factor on the ice. In his first season with the Buckeyes, Messner has tallied 11 goals and 13 assists for a total of 24 points.

#2- Junior Tanner Laczynski
Laczynski is a skilled playmaker and is one of the team’s top point-scorers. The 6’1″, 192-pound center from Shorewood, Illinois has racked up an impressive 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points so far this season.

#3- Senior Dakota Joshua
A fan favorite, Joshua is known for his physicality on the ice. The 6’3″, 206-pound winger from Buffalo Grove Illinois has tallied 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points in his final season with the Buckeyes.

#4- Sophomore Ronnie Hein
At just 5’10” and 170 pounds, Hein is one of the smallest forwards on the team. But don’t let his size fool you- he’s a tenacious player with a big heart. So far this season, Hein has tallied 11 goals and 9 assists for 20 points.

The Defensemen

The Ohio State Buckeyes will look to a group of experienced defensemen to lead the way this season. With a mix of veterans and newcomers, the blue line will be a key to the team’s success.

Ohio State is led by senior defenseman Tommy Parran. Parran is a two-time All-American and was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year last season. He will be counted on to provide leadership and stability on the Buckeyes’ back end.

Junior Reilly Walsh returns after a successful sophomore campaign in which he was named second-team All-Big Ten Walsh had six goals and 15 assists last season and will be looked to for offensive production from the blue line again this year.

Sophomores Sean Romeo and Matt Miller return after solid freshman seasons. Romeo was named third-team All-Big Ten after posting a 2.45 GAA and .923 save percentage while Miller chipped in with two goals and seven assists. Both players will be counted on to take another step forward this season.

The Buckeyes will also have contributions from newcomers Wyatt Ege and Connor Murphy. Ege, a transfer from Colorado College provides depth and experience while Murphy, a freshman, will look to make an immediate impact.

The Goalies

Though there are many important players on a hockey team the goalies are perhaps the most crucial. They are the ones charged with stopping the puck from going into the net and giving their team a chance to win. So who are the goalies on the Ohio State Hockey team?

Sophomore goalie Tommy Nappier is from Chicago, Illinois. He played for Team USA at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2017 and 2018. Nappier was named to the All-Big Ten freshman team last season and posted a .931 save percentage, which was third best in the conference.

Freshman goalie Neil Robinson is from Oshawa, Ontario. He played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before coming to Ohio State In 2017-18, he had a .916 save percentage with Oshawa and was named an OHL Third Team All-Star.

The Coaches

Ohio State Hockey is coached by the legendary John Markell, who has been at the helm of the team since 1996. Markell has led the Buckeyes to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Frozen Fours and one National Championship game appearance. He is a five-time recipient of the CCHA Coach of the Year Award and was inducted into the Ohio Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Markell is assisted by Steve Rohlik, who has been with the Buckeyes since 2011. Rohlik is a former Ohio State captain and played professional hockey for 12 seasons before returning to his alma mater to join Markell’s Coaching Staff

The Schedule

The Ohio State Buckeyes will start their 2019-20 season on the road against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The first game of the season will be on Friday, October 11th at 7:07 pm. The Buckeyes will then play the Bulldogs again on Saturday, October 12th at 8:07 pm. The next weekend, the Buckeyes will have their home opener against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats. The game will be on Friday, October 18th at 7:37 pm and Saturday, October 19th at 8:07 pm.

The Record

The Ohio State Buckeyes are set to open their 18-19 season on October 6 at home against the Lake Superior State Lakers. The Buckeyes are coming off a season in which they went 18-14-5, good for sixth place in the Big Ten They were eliminated in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament by Michigan.
