The history of Optimist Baseball

Optimist Baseball is a longstanding tradition in the town of Derry, New Hampshire. The history of the Optimist Club and Optimist Baseball dates back to the early 1920s when a group of local businessmen decided to start a youth baseball program for the boys in the community. The Optimist Club, which was originally founded in 1921, became the official sponsor of the Baseball Program in 1922.

Optimist Baseball has been a part of the Derry community for nearly 100 years and is one of the oldest youth baseball programs in the state of New Hampshire. The program has been through some changes over the years, but the one constant has been its commitment to providing a positive Youth Sports experience for all participants.

The different levels of Optimist Baseball

Optimist Baseball is a youth baseball organization that provides opportunities for Boys and Girls to play baseball at different levels. The organization is divided into three levels: Rookie, Minor, and Major.

Rookie level is for boys and girls ages 7-8. The focus at this level is on having fun and learning the Basic Skills of the game.

Minor level is for boys and girls ages 9-10. The focus at this level is on refining the skills learned at the rookie level and preparing the players for more competitive baseball

Major level is for boys and girls ages 11-12. The focus at this level is on preparing the players for high school baseball The Major League also has a tournament team that competes in Optimist International tournaments.

The rules of Optimist Baseball

Optimist Baseball is a Great Place for your child to play ball Here are a few things you should know about our league.

We play by the official rules of baseball, with a few exceptions. We use a continuous batting order meaning that all players bat every inning. We allow free substitutions in the field, so every player gets to play a variety of positions. And we have a mercy rule if one team is ahead by 10 or more runs after three innings, or by 15 or more runs after four innings, the game is over and the other team gets to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

We have divisions for players ages 7-12. Each team plays an eight-game regular season schedule, followed by a single-elimination tournament. Every player receives a trophy at the end of the season, and there are special awards for batting champions and tournament MVPs.

Our games are played on weekdays after 5:00 pm and on Saturdays between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Our fields are located at Optimist Park (6400 Kessler Boulevard East Drive, Indianapolis) and Eisenhower Park (6505 East 30th Street, Indianapolis).
