The designated hitter (DH) is a player in baseball who does not play a position in the field, but rather only bats. The position is reserved for particularly strong hitters who might not be able to play a position due to injury or lack of fielding skills. In the American League the designated hitter is included in the lineup; in the National League pitchers take their turn at batting just like any other player.

The first designated hitter was Cliff Johnson of the Texas Rangers who took his place in the batting order on April 7, 1973. Johnson went on to have a successful career as a DH, batting .273 with 275 Home Runs and 1,017 RBIs. He was named to the All-Star team in 1974 and 1978.

Other notable designated hitters include Edgar Martinez of the Seattle Mariners Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox and Nelson Cruz of the Baltimore Orioles These sluggers have made a name for themselves by batting cleanup and providing powerhitting production for their teams.

Martinez, Thomas, Ortiz, and Cruz are all members of the exclusive 300 home run/1000 RBI club. This group also includes Manny Ramirez another great DH who played for both the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox
