Jim Valvano took over as Head Coach of Otero in 1981, and led the team to its third NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. Valvano left Otero after only one season to take over as head coach at North Carolina State where he led the Wolfpack to an NCAA championship in 1983.

Otero’s fourth and final Head Coach was Steve Alford, who coached the team from 1983 until 1987. Alford led the team to two more NCAA tournament appearances, in 1984 and 1985, and also helped Otero win its third conference championship in 1986. After leaving Otero, Alford went on to have a successful coaching career at both the collegiate and professional levels.
