The Golden Age of Perry Basketball
In the early 2000s, Perry Basketball was one of the most successful programs in Houston. The team won several state championships and was nationally ranked. Players like T.J. Ford, Kelvin Sampson and Jai Lucas helped put Perry Basketball on the map.
However, the program fell on hard times in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The team struggled to win games and attract top recruits Many people thought that Perry Basketball was finished.
But in recent years the program has made a resurgence. The team has returned to prominence, winning several conference championships and making deep runs in the postseason. Perry Basketball is once again one of the top programs in Houston.
The modern ERA of Perry Basketball
In the late 1990s, Perry Basketball went through a bit of a renaissance. New Head Coach Jason Henry switched the team’s focus from being a traditional post-oriented squad to one that played an uptempo style predicated on forcing turnovers and getting out in transition. The result was a string of successful seasons that saw Perry Basketball establish itself as one of the top programs in Houston.
Under Henry’s guidance, Perry Basketball won back-to-back district championships in 1998 and 1999, and made a deep run in the state playoffs in 2000, ultimately falling in the regional semifinals. That team featured future NBA player Kendrick Perkins, who would go on to win an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2008.
After Henry’s departure, Perry Basketball continued to enjoy success under new head coach Jimmy Williams. Williams led the team to another district championship in 2001 and helped Perkins develop into one of the top High School prospects in the country.
Today, Perry Basketball is once again one of the premier programs in Houston. The team has won back-to-back district championships and is currently ranked No. 1 in the city by the Houston Chronicle. With a talented roster that includes several Division I prospects, Perry Basketball looks poised to make another deep run in the state playoffs this year.
