Platense Basketball: A History

Platense Basketball is a Basketball team based in La Plata, Argentina. The team was founded in 1923, and has been a part of the Argentine league since its inception. The team has won the Argentinian League Championship five times, most recently in 2013. Platense is one of the most historic teams in Argentina, and has a storied rivalry with fellow Argentinian club Boca Juniors

The Early Years

The early years of Platense Basketball were characterized by a lack of organization and facilities. Players often had to improvise with whatever they had on hand, whether it was a makeshift hoop or a ball made of rags. Despite the challenges, the game quickly gained popularity among the locals.

In the early 1920s, a group of businessmen decided to form a professional league. They built a proper court and recruited some of the best players in town. The league was an instant success, and soon other teams popped up all over the city.

By the late 1920s, Platense Basketball was one of the most popular sports in Buenos Aires. The league continued to grow and attract top talent from all over Argentina. In 1931, Platense won its first championship, cementing its place as one of the best teams in the country.

The golden era

The 1980s were considered the Golden Era for Platense basketball. The team reached the pinnacle of success, winning the Liga Nacional de Básquetbol championship in 1984 and 1985. The squad was led by legendary players such as Esteban De la Fuente, Hugo Sconochini, and Juan “Pepe” Sánchez. Platense enjoyed a successful run in the 1984 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, defeating powerhouse teams such as Maccabi Tel Aviv and Real Madrid en route to a second-place finish. The team’s success on the court led to increased popularity off of it, as Platense became one of the most popular basketball teams in Argentina.

The modern ERA

In the 1990s, Professional Basketball in Argentina underwent a radical transformation. The newly professionalized Liga Nacional de Básquetbol (LNB) became the Premier Basketball league in the country, replacing the long-standing amateur Campeonato Argentino de Clubes (ACC). Since then, the LNB has been home to some of Argentina’s greatest players and teams.

Basketball in Argentina reached its zenith in the early 2000s with the emergence of a new generation of Argentine players Led by future NBA All-Star Emanuel Ginóbili, this “golden generation” of Argentine basketball would go on to win gold at the 2004 Olympics and multiple Fiba World Championships.

In recent years Platense has struggled to keep up with the other teams in the LNB. After a string of poor finishes in the early 2010s, Platense was relegated to the second-tier Liga Nacional B in 2014. The team has yet to return to the top flight of Argentine basketball.

The Championships

In 1981, the Platense basketball team won its first championship, taking home the title of the Argentine Basketball Association The team became a powerhouse in the league, winning eight championships in total. In the 1990s, Platense also won three South American Championships.
