Life as a Big Leaguer
Most of us will never know what it’s like to play professional baseball let alone be good enough to play in the Major Leagues Ryan Jensen is a Big League pitcher who has played for the Tampa Bay Rays Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres He’s currently a free agent I had a chance to sit down with Ryan and talk about his career and what it’s like to be a professional baseball player
Jensen was drafted by the Rays in 2010 and made his Major League debut in 2013. He was traded to the Orioles in 2014 and then to the Padres in 2016. He’s pitched in relief and as a starter, but he’s mostly been used as a middle reliever. In 2017, he had his best season, pitching to a 2.48 ERA in 73 innings.
I asked Jensen about the biggest difference between theMinor Leagues and the Majors. “The thing that stands out the most is the level of competition, plainly and simply,” he told me. “Every pitch counts so much more. The hitters are more patient, they don’t chase as many bad pitches, they can all hit mistakes really hard… And on top of that, they have better approaches at the plate overall. They know what they want to do up there before they even get in the box most of the time. It’s tough!”
Jensen is originally from Idaho Falls Idaho, but he now lives in Arizona with his wife Lacey and their two young daughters. I asked him what it was like being away from his family for six months out of the year while he was playing baseball “It definitely takes some getting used to at first, but you just have to trust that your family can handle things back home while you’re gone,” he said
