The history of Shattuck St. Mary’s Hockey

Shattuck-St. Mary’s is a private, coeducational Episcopal day and boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota, United States The school enrolls students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It sits on a rural 1,200-acre (5 km2) campus 80 miles (130 km) south of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Shattuck-St. Mary’s was ranked the nation’s number one boarding school by Forbes in 2010.[1] In 2015, Niche ranked Shattuck the best boarding High School the second best Catholic high school and the seventh best private high school in America.[2][3]

The first ice hockey game played at Shattuck was in 1903. The game was played outdoors on a makeshift rink carved out of a backyard pasture.[4] In 1915, Frederick20 “Bunny” Ahearne became the first former Shattuck player to play professional hockey when he joined the Montreal Canadiens [citation needed]

Many alumni of St. Mary’s have gone on to successful careers in Professional Hockey including Keith Tkachuk,[5] Doug Weight,[6] Zach Parise,[7] Nick Bjugstad,[8][9] Nathan MacKinnon,[10][11][12] Tom Kurvers,[13][14], and Jonathan Toews.[15][16] As of 2017 five former students have been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and 26 alumni have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame [17], making it one of the most successful hockey programs in North America
